HP Notebook PCs - Battery light turns on and off while battery is charging

HP Notebook PCs use lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries, which are charged using a fast charge/slow charge cycle. The battery is continuously infused with full power (fast charge), and then alternates with much less power (slow charge). During the slow charge stage of the cycle, the battery light might turn off and appear as though it is not charging.

You can confirm that the battery is slow charging by checking the battery status in the taskbar. The Windows battery status displays Online – discharging during the slow-charging cycle.

Understand the battery light status

On some notebooks, the battery light does not work as stated in the user guide. See the following tables to understand the correct operation.

For notebooks with a dual-color battery charge indicator

LED status

Battery charge status

White

0% to 90% charge

Amber

Greater than 90% charge

Off

No battery inserted or power has been removed and reconnected when battery charge greater than 95%

For notebooks with a single-color battery charge indicator

LED status

Battery charge status

On

0% to 99% charge

Off

No battery inserted or power has been removed and reconnected when battery charge was greater than 95%

Note:

The battery light turns on only if the battery charge is between 0 and 94% when power is connected.

To reduce the number of short-charge cycles and extend the service life of the battery, the notebook is designed to start charging only when the battery capacity is below 95%. Therefore, even if an AC adapter is connected to the notebook, the battery does not charge if its charge level is at 95% or greater.

If the AC adapter is plugged into the notebook and the battery charge level is 95% or greater, the battery light does not turn on until the battery charge level is 94% or less and the battery begins to charge. This might take several days because there is no drain on the battery while the notebook is running on AC power.

Note:

The user guide might state that the battery light blinks red if there is no battery in the notebook. This is incorrect. The battery light is off if there is no battery in the notebook.
