HP Printer Assistant is shown on the Windows desktop and in the Start menu as the name of your HP printer model. Use one of the following methods to find and open Printer Assistant.
Double-click the printer icon of your printer from the Windows desktop.
Search Windows for your printer model name, and then click your printer in the list of results.
If you cannot find the name of your printer on the Windows desktop or in the Start menu, then download the Full Feature software or HP Easy Start from the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.
Download and install the full feature software for your printer from the HP website.
HP Printer Assistant is not available for Mac computers. The Mac print driver installs HP Utility, which has similar tools and features.
Turn on the printer.
If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer. The software installation prompts you to connect the cable if needed.
If a Welcome to Software & Drivers, let’s identify your product to get started page displays, click Printer, type your printer model number, and then click Submit.
The software results page for your printer displays with the default operating system selected.
If you need to change the operating system, click Choose a different OS, select your version, and then click Change.
Under the Installation Software and Full/Basic Driver heading, select the Full Feature Driver install or HP Easy Start, and then click Download.
Open the downloaded file and follow the prompts to install the software. When installing through HP Easy Start, select Full Software and Drivers as your solution.
During the installation, select the Typical or Recommended type of installation when prompted by the software installer.
After upgrading Windows to a newer version, HP Printer Assistant displays the Connect a new printer tool instead of the printer settings and tools view. In other cases, Printer Assistant displays the Select a Printer window with multiple names for your printer or does not open when the printer is connected through USB.

After completing the Windows upgrade, make sure to restart your printer and computer at least once before attempting to print or scan.
After upgrading your computer to the most recent version of Windows, HP Printer Assistant software displays the Connect a new printer view instead of the Printer Settings and Tools view.
Set up the printer connection again to resolve the issue. In some cases, reinstalling the HP driver and software is required.
Connect the printer again to regain access to Printer Assistant tools.
Click Connect a new printer.

Click Programs and Feature.
In the list of installed programs, click your HP printer name, and then click Uninstall or Yes.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
Restart the computer.
After uninstalling the software, download and install the latest version of the full feature software.
As an alternative method to downloading the software, you can use the installation CD if it includes the Windows driver.

This issue is for computers and network-connected printers upgraded to the most recent version of Windows. After installing the full feature HP printer software, the Select a Printer window displays with two or more names for your printer when you open HP Printer Assistant software. Printing functionality might be different depending on which name you select.
Use the following workaround to remove all printer names from the Devices and Printers folder, and then set up the printer again.
Delete the printers from Windows before setting up your printer again.
Close HP Printer Assistant.
Search Windows for devices, and then click Devices and Printers in the list of results.
Right-click one of the icons for your printer, and then click Remove Device. Repeat this step for any other icons for your printer.
Reconnect the printer with the HP software.
Open HP Printer Assistant again.

Turn off the printer.
Close all running programs on your computer, and then restart your computer.

Open HP Printer Assistant.
If necessary, repeat these steps if additional printer names display in Printer Assistant again.
After upgrading to the most recent version of Windows with a USB-connected printer, HP Printer Assistant software does not open or the Printer Setup & Software screen displays when you click the desktop shortcut.
To resolve the issue, reconnect the printer or reinstall the software.
Connect the printer again to regain access to Printer Assistant tools.
If the Printer Setup & Software screen displays when you click the printer desktop icon, click Connect a new printer, and follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer again.
