HP Notebook PCs - Automatically disable the touchpad when an external mouse is connected

You can configure the touchpad to be disabled automatically when an external mouse is connected to the computer and re-enabled when the mouse is disconnected from the computer.

Note:

If you are using a wireless mouse connected to the computer via a USB receiver, you must remove the USB receiver from the computer to disconnect the mouse and re-enable the touchpad.

Enable or disable the touchpad in Windows

Enable or disable the touchpad when an external USB mouse is connected to the computer. You can also configure the touchpad to be disabled automatically when an external mouse is connected.

Note:

If the option to enable or disable the touchpad is not available, download and install the latest touchpad driver from Windows Update. For more information, see HP PCs - Updating drivers using Windows update (Windows 11, 10).

  1. Select the Search icon in the taskbar, type touchpad settings in the search box, and then press enter.

  2. Click the Touchpad button to turn the touchpad off or on.

    Note:

    To configure the touchpad to be disabled automatically when an external mouse is connected, ensure that the Touchpad button is set to On.

    Note:

    If you are not using an external mouse, press the tab key repeatedly until the pointer rests on the touchpad button. Then, press the spacebar to select the button.

  3. To automatically disable the touchpad when an external mouse is connected to the computer, configure the setting using the instructions for your operating system.

    • In Windows 11, click the arrow icon to expand the Touchpad settings, and then clear the Leave the touchpad on when a mouse is connected check box.

Run Windows Update

Update your Windows 11 or Windows 10 computer using Windows Update.

  1. In Windows, search for and open Check for updates.

    If there are any available updates, they begin automatically.

    Note:

    To download and install optional updates, use the following instructions for your operating system:

    • In Windows 11, select Advanced options > Optional updates, select the updates that you want to install, and then click Download & install.

    • In Windows 10, select View all optional updates, select the updates that you want to install, and then click Download and install.

  2. After the updates install, restart your computer when prompted.
