HP Notebook PCs - System BIOS Recovery has occurred

On startup, you might see a System BIOS Recovery has occurred error message indicating that the system found and corrected an error in the BIOS.

If the BIOS has been corrupted, a blink code flashes on the keyboard consisting of two blinks of the Caps Lock or Num Lock lights. There is a pause between the end of the error code and its repetition.

You might not notice the blink codes, because the computer automatically restarts, attempts to reinstall the BIOS, and restarts again. You might notice only an extra-long startup process at first. When this process finishes, a System BIOS Recovery has occurred message is displayed.

Restore the BIOS

Learn how to restore the BIOS.

To restore the BIOS using a key press combination, go to HP Notebook PCs - Recovering the BIOS (Basic Input Output System).

Run HP Support Assistant to resolve a BIOS error

To resolve a BIOS error, run HP Support Assistant (for Windows 10) and check the computer for the latest BIOS and other issues.

  1. If you do not have HP Support Assistant installed, go to www.hp.com/go/helpandsupport and download and install the latest version of HP Support Assistant.

  2. Open HP Support Assistant.

  3. Select Maintain > Tune Up > Start Tune-up.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Install an updated BIOS

To resolve a BIOS issue, install the latest BIOS.

CAUTION:

You must install a BIOS designed for your specific computer model. Attempting to install an incorrect BIOS will damage the computer and might cause the computer to stop operating completely.

To install the latest BIOS updates, go to HP Consumer Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) (Windows) or HP Business Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) for information.

If you are unable to boot your computer, use a different computer to download the BIOS from the HP website onto a portable storage device or USB flash drive, and then copy the file to the computer with the corrupt or missing BIOS application.
