HP Deskjet 1000, 2000, 3000, Ink Advantage 2010 - Color or black ink not printing

The printer is working, but the printed output is missing black or color ink, or the printed page is blank or has little ink. This publication is for HP Deskjet 1000 (J110), 2000 (J210), 3000 (J310), or HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 2010 (K010a) printers.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Check ink cartridges

Very low ink levels, using non-HP cartridges, and rough handling can cause print quality issues.

  1. Replace any non-HP or refilled cartridges with genuine HP cartridges. HP supplies are available from the HP Store and local retailers.

HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP or refilled cartridges. Go to HP Anti Counterfeiting and Fraud Program for more information.

  2. Check ink levels. Very low ink levels can cause print quality problems. See Check HP printer ink or toner levels for more help.

  3. Rough handling of cartridges during transport or installation can cause print quality problems. Wait a few hours for the automatic servicing routine to complete, and then try to print again.

Replace empty or non-HP cartridges

Replace any cartridges that are low, empty, or non-HP.

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.

  2. Open the cartridge door, and then wait for the carriage to move to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you proceed.

  4. Remove the new cartridge from its package.

  5. Use the pull tab to remove the plastic protective tape from the new cartridge.

    CAUTION:

Do not attempt to replace the protective tape or touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in an ink system failure.

  6. Slide the new cartridge into its slot until it snaps firmly into place.

  7. Repeat these steps to replace the other cartridge, if necessary.

  8. Close the cartridge door.

Clean the cartridges automatically

Cleaning the cartridges resolves many print quality issues. The printer toolbox has a cartridge cleaning function.

Note:

Toolbox cleaning requires full HP software.

Select the procedure for your operating system.

Replace problem cartridges

If you still see problems after completing the troubleshooting steps, and you did not replace cartridges in an earlier step, replace the problem cartridges now.

  • If you see print defects in the black areas on the test page or printouts, replace the black cartridge.

  • If you see print defects in the color areas on the test page or printouts, replace the tri-color cartridge.

Note:

Workaround: the printer can work with only one installed cartridge. Prints with just the black cartridge are in black only. Prints with just the tri-color cartridge have black areas that are not as dark.

The cartridge might be covered under HP's warranty. See HP Printers - Ink Supplies Limited Warranty for more information.

Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.

To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.
