HP Designjet 500 and 800 Printers - When Printing from Windows XP or Windows 2003 Server Two Jobs Appear in the Queue

When printing from the HPGL/2 driver on a Windows XP or 2003 Server computer, two jobs appear in the queue. The first job is just an empty file and the second job actually contains the job data.

To fix this issue, disable 16 Spoolsmart in the HPGL/2 driver by following the instructions below:

1. Access the printer's folder on the computer.
2. Right-click the Designjet 500 or 800 driver icon in the “Printers” list.
3. Select Printing Preferences.
4. Click the Basic Setup tab.
5. Click the About button.
6. Press and hold down the F8 key on the keyboard, then press ENTER (while still holding the F8 key down).
7. In the Special Options window, uncheck the Enable 16 Spoolsmart option.
8. Click the OK button until returned to the printer's folder.

Now when printing a job, only one job will appear in the queue.
