The BIOS controls communication between system devices such as the disk drive, display, and keyboard. It also stores configuration information, such as information for peripheral types, the startup sequence, and extended memory amounts. Each BIOS version is customized based on the computer hardware configuration, and includes a built-in setup utility to access and change certain computer settings.
Updating the BIOS is recommended as standard maintenance of the computer. It can also help to resolve specific issues, improve computer performance, or provide support for hardware components or Windows upgrades.
If you need to update the BIOS, go to HP Consumer Desktop PCs - Updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) (Windows) or HP Consumer Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) (Windows). You can update the BIOS whether or not Windows starts.
