HP Photosmart 5510 e-All-in-One Printer Series - Mac OS X: Multiple 'Align print cartridges to get best print quality' or 'Genuine HP cartridges have been installed, click to align' Messages Display on the Mac

Issue

After you install a new cartridge and complete the alignment, multiple 'Align print cartridges to get best print quality' or 'Genuine HP cartridges have been installed, click to align' messages continue to display on the Mac. This issue applies to Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard, Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard, OS X v10.7 Lion, and OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion.
Try these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Check for software updates

  1. Click the Apple icon (), and then click Software Updates. The Mac OS checks for new software.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Reset the printing system

If the previous solution did not resolve the problem, resetting the Mac OS X printing system might help. Click your operating system version for steps to reset the printing system.

Solution three: Uninstall and then reinstall the HP software

Follow these steps to remove the current software, and then reinstall the latest software.

Step one: Uninstall the printer software

Choose from the following methods to uninstall the software. If you are uncertain, try the first method. If you do not see an Uninstaller option, use the other method.

Step two: Quit the printer processes

  1. Double-click the Macintosh HD icon () on the desktop.
  2. Click Applications, and then click Utilities.
  3. Double-click Activity Monitor.
  4. Click All Processes from the pop-up menu in the upper-right corner.
  5. Select the processes from the following list, and then click the Quit Process button. The processes that display in the All Processes list vary by printer.
    • Hpusbmond
    • Hpdot4d
    • HP AiO Notifications
    • HP Event Handler
    • HP IO classic Proxy
    • HP IO Classic Proxy 2
    • Pipedaemon
    • Print Daemon
    • HP Photosmart

Step three: Empty the trash

  1. Click the Trash icon (). The Trash folder opens.
  2. Before you permanently delete all items in the Trash, review the list, and make sure that all the files and folders can be deleted. Drag and drop any files you wish to keep from out of the Trash to where you want them (for example, the Macintosh HD icon on the desktop).
  3. Click Empty.
  4. Restart the computer.

Step four: Repair permissions

Follow these steps to repair the permissions affected by removing the folders and files.
  1. Double-click the Macintosh HD icon () on the desktop.
  2. Click Applications, click Utilities, and then double-click Disk Utility.
  3. On the left side of the window, select the Macintosh HD directory. The directory is indented and is usually the second entry in the list.
  4. Click Repair Disk Permissions. The process might take several minutes to complete.
  5. After the process completes, close the Disk Utility.

Step five: Install the latest HP software

Follow these steps to download and install the software for your printer from the HP website.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if necessary. The software installation prompts you to connect the cable if needed.
  3. If a Let's identify your product to get started page displays, click Printer, type your printer model number, and then click Submit.
  4. If you need to change the operating system, click Change, select your version, and then click Change.
  5. Under the Driver heading, click Download for the full software package, or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.
