Cannot print or scan with an HP printer after a Windows update

After a Microsoft Windows software update installs, the printer no longer works as expected. Check for known issues with the update, and then reinstall the printer driver and software if necessary.

For printing issues after upgrading to a new version of Windows, go to HP printer does not work after upgrading to Windows 11.

Check the latest Windows update

Open the update history on the PC to check for known issues for printers.

  1. Search Windows for and open View Update history.

  2. Review the list for the update that installed when the printer issues began.

  3. Click the update name or Learn more to open the Microsoft support page for the update.

  4. Scroll down the page to the Known issues in this update section, and then look for symptoms related to printers.

  5. If an issue with printing is listed, follow the steps in the workaround provided to resolve the issue.

Uninstall then reinstall the HP printer software for Windows

Uninstall the HP print driver and software, remove the printer from your Devices list, and then reinstall the latest recommended HP driver or app.

  1. Disconnect the printer from the computer or network.

  2. Search Windows for and open Add or remove programs.

  3. In the list of installed programs, click your HP printer name, and then click Uninstall. If your printer name does not display, select HP Smart, and then click Uninstall.

  4. If a User Account Control message displays, click Yes.

  5. Follow the instructions to complete the software removal, and then restart the computer.

  6. Search Windows for and open Control Panel.

  7. Click Devices and Printers.

  8. For each printer icon with your HP printer name, right-click the icon, and then select Remove Device or Uninstall device to complete the uninstall.

    Note:

    If no printer icons display, the printer has already been removed.

  9. Go to 123.hp.com, and then enter your product name to download and install the software and drivers for your printer.
