Send faxes with the HP Smart app

Use Mobile Fax to securely send documents from a mobile device or computer.

You do not need a fax or phone line to send faxes with Mobile Fax.

Enable Mobile Fax in the HP Smart app

Install the HP Smart app if you have not already done so, and then enable Mobile Fax.

  1. Make sure your mobile device or computer is connected to your wireless network.

  2. Open the HP Smart app. If you do not have HP Smart, download it from 123.hp.com or your app store.

  3. Click the Mobile Fax tile. If you do not see the Mobile Fax tile on your Home screen, click Personalize Tiles, and then click the Mobile Fax toggle to add the tile to your Home screen.

    Note:

    If you do not see a Mobile Fax option in the Personalize menu, Mobile Fax might not be available in your country/region.

  4. Follow any instructions to sign in or create an HP account.

Send a fax with Mobile Fax

Create a fax in the HP Smart app, and then send it securely to a fax machine.

  1. In the HP Smart app, click the Mobile Fax tile.

  2. In the To section, add a recipient fax number and name, or click the Contacts icon to select a previously saved contact.

  3. In the From section, add your name and a phone number. The recipient can use this information to contact you. To add your fax number or email, click Add optional info.

  4. To add a cover page, click the Add a cover page toggle, and then type a subject and message.

  5. Attach a supported file, or scan the item you want to fax using your printer or mobile device camera.

    Note:

    You can send up to 50 pages or 20MB as a single fax job.

    • Attach a document or photo: Click the Files & Photos icon , navigate to a folder on your mobile device or computer, cloud storage, or social media account, sign in if necessary, and then select a single or multi-page file.

    • Scan a document or photo with your printer: Click the Scanner icon , click the Settings icon to change scan settings, and then scan the document or photo with your printer. Click the Plus sign to add pages to the scan. When you finish scanning, click Next.

      Note:

      To scan with a printer, you must have a printer with scanning capability added to the HP Smart app.

    • Scan a document or photo with your mobile device camera: Tap the Camera icon , and then scan a document or photo with your mobile device camera. Click the Plus sign to add pages to the scan. When you finish scanning, click Next.

  6. Click Send fax.

Can I receive faxes with Mobile Fax?

No. Mobile Fax is for sending faxes only.

To receive faxes, you must have a fax-capable printer.

What if I see 'Delivery Failed' or an 'SFAPI' error?

Try the following troubleshooting tips when a fax fails to send or an SFAPI error displays.

  • Look for an error and solution in the HP Smart app: Check the HP Smart app for a notification or error message, and then follow the instructions to resolve the error.

  • Make sure the fax number you dialed is correct and the recipient is ready for your fax: A fax might fail because the recipient fax machine is busy, offline, or no longer in use.

  • Try again: Temporary disruptions in internet service or the phone system might cause your fax to fail.

Can I cancel or remove Mobile Fax?

If you do not want to use Mobile Fax, you can remove the tile from your Home screen in the Personalize Tiles list.

Mobile Fax is a permanent feature of the HP Smart app, similar to printing photos or scanning. It is automatically included in newer versions of the app.

HP does not require payment or a subscription to use the Mobile Fax service during the free trial period. 30 days before the end of the free trial period, HP offers paid service plan options. You can opt out at that time, or cancel an existing subscription at any time.

What are the Mobile Fax system requirements?

The following requirements must be met before you can use Mobile Fax.

Android and iOS

  • HP Smart app version 7.0 or later

  • Android 6.0 or later or Apple iOS 11 or later

Windows 10

  • HP Smart app version 11.0 or later

  • Windows 10 version 1709 or later

Mac

  • HP Smart app version 4.1 or later

Why should I send a fax instead of an email?

Faxing can be more secure than email.

A fax is encrypted, and the files you send are only visible to you and the recipient. It is a safe way to send personal data such as medical history or sensitive information such as legal contracts.

How do I know if my fax was received?

After you send a fax, a Fax Delivered or Delivery Failed message displays in the HP Smart app.

Previous faxes are listed in Fax History as delivered or failed . Find Fax History in the More menu in Mobile Fax. If a fax does not display under Sent, check the Draft list.

How do I cancel a fax?

After you send a fax, you can click Cancel Fax at the bottom of the screen.

You can only cancel a fax before it has been delivered. When a fax is canceled during a transmission, the recipient might still receive part or all of the fax.

How do I find or save my fax history?

Retrieve prior faxes from the fax history window.

  1. Click the Mobile Fax tile, click the More icon , and then click Fax History.

  2. Click any fax to view the details of that fax.

  3. Click Export Fax Log to save a fax to your mobile device, computer, or cloud account.

    CAUTION:

    Faxes saved outside of the HP Smart app might not be secure.
