This document is for HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 4515, 4516, 4518, and 5525 e-All-in-One Printers and Mac computers.

To set up an HP printer on a wireless (Wi-Fi) network, connect the printer to the wireless network, then install the print driver and software from the HP website on a Mac computer. When prompted during the installation, select Wireless as the connection type.

Step 1: Prepare for installation

Before setting up the printer on your wireless network, gather the network name and password, and turn on your router, printer, and Mac.

Gather the following items:
- Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
- Network password: The password might also be called the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
- A computer connected to your wireless network
- Internet access: HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL for software downloads, using Web Services, and getting printer updates.
Make sure the router and computer are turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network to which you want to connect the printer. Turn on the printer and place it close to the computer and within range of the router during the setup procedure.
Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables from the printer.

Step 2: Connect the printer to the wireless network

The Wireless Setup Wizard provides an easy way to set up and manage the printer wireless connection to your Mac.

Turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on.
On the printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon .

The Wireless Summary screen displays.
Touch Settings, and then touch Wireless Setup Wizard.
Follow the instructions on the control panel to connect the printer to your wireless network.

Step 3: Download and install the driver

Download and install the most current version of your printer full feature software from 123.hp.com.

Go to 123.hp.com.
Type your printer model into the Enter your device's model number to begin box.
Select your printer from the dropdown menu, and then click Begin.
Click Download.
When the download is complete, click the file named xxxx.dmg in the browser downloads bar or in the downloads folder to launch the installer.

In the installer window, double click HP Inkjet SW.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
When prompted, close the installation software.

The HP Utility software opens.
In the HP Utility Setup window, select the name of your printer, and then click Continue.
Click Add Printer.

The Add window displays.
Click the name of your printer.

Make sure you select the printer that has Bonjour listed under Kind.
Click the Use or Print Using menu, and then select the name of your printer in the drop-down menu.

Click Add to add the printer to the list.
In the installer Add Printer window, click Continue.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the printer setup, and then click Done.

What if I do not know my wireless network name or password?

Go to Find Your Wireless WEP, WPA, WPA2 Password (Mac) for methods to look up your network name and password information.

How do I reconnect my printer wirelessly?

If your printer disconnects from your wireless network after setup, if you changed your Internet service provider, or you purchased a new router, you can manually reconnect the printer to your network with the Wireless Setup Wizard on the printer.

Turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on.
On the printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon .

The Wireless Summary screen appears.
Touch Settings, and then touch Wireless Setup Wizard.
Follow the instructions on the control panel to connect the printer to your wireless network.

What can I do to troubleshoot network or printer connection issues?

Try the following recommendations and procedures to help you troubleshoot and avoid wireless connectivity issues. You can try these tips separately or in combination to get a successful wireless signal.

Restart the printer and the computer: Restarting the computer and the printer can clear possible error conditions.
Confirm the printer connection and network name: On the printer, make sure that the blue light next to the Wireless icon () is on and steady, and then touch the Wireless network menu to make sure that the printer is connected to the same network as your computer.
Manually connect the printer to the network: Many HP printers have a wireless setup wizard tool available on the printer control panel network or wireless settings menus. Follow the steps to enter your network name and password to connect the printer to the network.
Move the printer and router closer together: Move the printer and the computer closer to your wireless router, but no closer than 6 ft (1.8 m). Wireless signals can be weaker at greater distances between the printer and the router.
Restart the router: If you are experiencing a slow or intermittent wireless connection, try restarting your router. Consult your router manufacturer, Internet service provider, or network administrator for instructions on how to restart the router.
Check your firewall software: Your firewall software might prevent the printer from accessing the computer. Accept or allow any firewall messages that display during the printer software download and installation, or configure the software to allow HP downloads and installations.
Check for obstructions between the printer and the router: Remove any metal objects between the printer, the computer, and the access point (router). Objects such as refrigerators or metal bookcases can interfere with wireless signals.
Check for other devices that emit radio and wireless signals: Move any device that emits radio signals, such as microwaves and cordless telephones, farther away from the printer. Such devices can interfere with wireless signals.
Set the IP address on the printer: Your printer can bypass automatic IP address assignment by DHCP and use any valid IP address you choose. Use the front panel menu to enter an IP address that is valid for use on your local area network.
Check Bonjour compatibility on the router: Make sure that your router is compatible with Bonjour, a networking technology developed by Apple. Check the specifications or support documentation for your router, or contact the router manufacturer for more information.
Check the router band setting: Many routers can operate in both 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz frequency bands, but not all HP printers support both bands. Make sure the 2.4 GHz router band is enabled and broadcasting. If the router broadcasts separate network names (SSIDs) for each band, connect the printer to the 2.4 GHz band SSID.

What if the Mac is unable to locate my printer during the installation?

The installer software cannot set up the printer if it is not available on the network or if there is a problem with your local network.

What if the HP Installer recommends to send the wireless settings to your printer?

If you install your driver within one to two hours after you first set up the printer, you might see a Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer (recommended) option during the installation.

HP Auto Wireless Connect automatically connects your printer to your wireless network without cables or entering network name and password settings. Many HP printers use this method to connect, depending on your computer and network environment.

HP recommends this network setup method if it displays. If this method does not display, you can connect using another guided setup process.

What if an error displays when installing an earlier version of my printer software?

After updating your Mac to a newer operating system version, you might get one of the following messages while trying to install older HP printer software.

HP Installer can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer
Unsupported Operating System
This HP software may not be compatible...

To resolve these messages, install the driver from 123.hp.com.
