HP Deskjet 3540, ENVY 4500 Printers - First Time Printer Setup

To set up a printer for the first time, remove the printer and all packing materials from the box, connect the power cable, set control panel preferences, load paper into the input tray, and then install the ink cartridges. After your printer is set up, download and install the latest print driver.

Step 1: Remove the printer from the box

Remove the printer from the box and all tape, stickers, and packing materials from the printer.
The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.
  1. Remove the printer from the box.
  2. Remove all tape and packing materials from the outside of the printer.
  3. Raise the scanner lid, and then remove the packing tape.

  4. Close the scanner lid.
  5. Gently grasp the handles on either side of the printer, raise the ink cartridge access door until it locks into place, and then remove all tape and packing material from inside the printer.

  6. Close the ink cartridge access door.

  7. Open the paper tray door, pull it toward you to extend the paper tray, and then remove the packing tape.

  8. Push the paper tray forward until it clicks into place, and then close the paper tray door.
  9. Recycle the packing materials.

Step 2: Connect the power cord and set your preferences

Plug the printer into a power source, turn on the printer, and then set your preferences.
note:
Do not connect a USB cable at this time. The connection to the computer is established during software installation.
  1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug the other end of the power cord into an electrical outlet.

  2. Turn on the printer.
  3. On the printer control panel, press the down arrow to select the language, and then press OK.
  4. Press the down arrow to select Yes, and then press OK.
    The Set Country/Region menu opens.
  5. Press the down arrow to select the country/region, and then press OK.
  6. Press the down arrow to select Yes, and then press OK.

Step 3: Load paper into the input tray

Load plain, white paper into the input tray after you set your preferences.
  1. Open the paper tray door, and then pull it toward you to extend the paper tray.
  2. Gently pull out the paper tray extender, and then lift up the paper catch.

  3. Slide the paper width guides to their outermost position.

  4. Load a stack of plain, white paper into the paper tray with the short edge forward, and then push the stack into the tray until it stops.

  5. Slide in the paper width guides until they rest against the edges of the paper.

  6. Push the paper tray forward until it clicks into place.

Step 4: Install the ink cartridges

Install the HP ink cartridges that shipped in the box with the printer.
  1. Grasp the handles on either side of the ink cartridge access door, and then raise the door until it locks into place.
    The carriage moves to the access area.

  2. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. Remove one of the ink cartridges from its package. Be careful to only touch the black plastic on the ink cartridge.

  4. Remove the plastic tape from the ink cartridge.
      caution:
    Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Do not replace the protective tape on the contacts. Handling these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  5. Lift up the lid on the ink cartridge slot.

  6. Hold the ink cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the printer, and then press the ink cartridge forward into the slot until it snaps into place.

  7. Close the lid on the ink cartridge slot to secure the ink cartridge into place.

  8. Repeat the previous steps to install the other ink cartridge.

  9. Close the ink cartridge access door.
  10. Follow the instructions on the control panel to start the ink cartridge alignment.
    The printer prints an alignment page.

Step 5: Align the ink cartridges

Aligning the ink cartridges is necessary to achieve the best print quality.
  1. After the alignment page prints, place the page with the print side down on the scanner glass. Position it according to the engraved guides around the glass.

  2. Close the scanner lid, and then touch OK.
    The printer aligns the ink cartridges.

Step 6: Install the printer software

Your HP printer hardware is now set up and you can install the printing software. Do not attempt to connect the printer to a computer until instructed to do so in the printing software.
