HP EliteBook 8530w Mobile Workstation - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the Keyboard for the HP EliteBook 8530w Mobile Workstation.

Minimum skill level

The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

Tools required

P1 Phillips-head screwdriver

Keyboard removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Loosen the two captive, spring-loaded P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
    note:
    The screw locations are marked by keyboard icons on the memory/wireless WAN Minicard cover.
  3. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  4. Slide the four plastic locking tabs toward the bottom edge of the keyboard to unlock the keyboard from the switch cover.
  5. Use a flat-bladed tool or your finger to lift the top edge of the keyboard and then rotate it upside down on the top cover.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the keyboard ribbon cable. There is minimal slack in the keyboard ribbon cable.
  6. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar to unlock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  7. Remove the keyboard ribbon cable from the ZIF connector.
  8. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar to unlock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  9. Remove the pointing stick ribbon cable from the ZIF connector.
  10. Remove the keyboard.

Keyboard replacement

  1. Place the keyboard upside down on the top cover.
  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the keyboard ribbon cable.
  3. Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
  4. Insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the pointing stick ribbon cable.
  5. Push the locking bar down to lock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
  6. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover.
  7. Press the keyboard flat and slide the four plastic locking tabs toward the rear of the notebook to lock the keyboard to the switch cover.
  8. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  9. Tighten the two captive, spring-loaded P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
