HP Notebook PCs - Adjusting Volume and Sound Settings in Mobile Internet Experience

This document pertains to HP Mini Notebook PCs with the Mobile Internet Experience
Your device has a variety of audio features that allow you to:
  • Play music using your device speakers and/or connected external speakers.
  • Record sound using an optional external microphone.
  • Download music from the Internet.
  • Create multimedia presentations using audio and images.
  • Transmit sound and images with instant messaging programs.

Connecting external audio devices

To reduce the risk of personal injury, adjust the volume before putting on headphones, earbuds, or a headset. For additional safety information, refer to the Regulatory, Safety and Environmental Notices.
To connect external devices such as external speakers, headphone, or a microphone, refer to the information provided with the device. For best results, remember the following tips:
  • Be sure that the device cable is securely connected to the correct jack on your device. (Cable connectors are normally color-coded to match the corresponding jacks on the device.)
  • Be sure to install any drivers required by the external device.
note:
A driver is a required program that acts like a translator between the device and the programs that use the device.

Checking your audio functions

To check the system sound on your device, follow these steps:
  1. Click Settings, Advanced tab, then click Sound.
  2. Click the Sounds tab
  3. Under System Sounds, select the event for which you wish to hear the sound.
  4. Select a sound from the list, and click the Play button located at the right of the event.
You should hear sound through the speakers or through connected headphones.
To confirm or change the audio settings on your device, click Settings, Advanced tab, then click Sound.

Adjusting the volume

You can adjust the volume using the following control options:
  1. Fn - Function key
  2. F8 key
  3. F10 key
  4. F11 key
  • Volume hotkey — A combination of the Fn key and either F8, F10, or the F11 function key:
    • To mute or restore volume, press Fn+F8.
    • To decrease volume, press Fn+F10.
    • To increase volume, press Fn+F11.
  • Operating system volume control:
    • Click the Volume icon in the notification area, at the bottom of the Home Screen
    • Increase or decrease the volume by moving the slider up or down.
  • Program volume control:
    Volume can also be adjusted within some programs.

Adjusting sound preferences

You can turn device sounds on and off using the Sound Preferences utility. You can also specify which sounds to play when a particular event occurs.
To adjust the sound preferences:
  1. Click the Settings button at the top-right of the Home Screen, and then click the Advanced tab.
  2. Click Sound. The Sound Preferences window opens.
  3. Modify your sound preferences, and then click Close.
