HP Photosmart C7100 All-in-One Printer Series - Setting up the All-in-One (Hardware)

Introduction
This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the product. Complete these steps before you install the product software on your computer.
This document includes the following steps to set up the product:
  • Remove all tape and cardboard from the All-in-One
  • Check the contents of the box
  • Attach the control panel faceplate, if not attached
  • Load plain white paper
  • Load paper in the photo tray
  • Connect the supplied phone cord
  • Connect the power cord
  • Set the language and country/region
  • Install the cartridges
  • Align the cartridges
Setting up the All-in-One
Follow these steps in order.
  note:
Do not connect a USB cable now. If you plan to use a USB cable to connect the printer to the computer, you will be prompted to connect it at the correct time during the software installation.
Step one: Remove all tape and cardboard from the All-in-One
  1. Remove the tape and cardboard packaging from inside and around the product, and remove the protective film from the control panel display.

  2. Push the button under the color graphics display and then lift the control panel.

Step two: Check the contents of the box
The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.
  note:
You might need to purchase a Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable or Ethernet (wired network) cable separately.
Step three: Attach the control panel faceplate, if not attached
  1. Position the control panel faceplate over the buttons on the product.

  2. Press down firmly on all edges of the faceplate until it snaps into place.

  3. Make sure that all of the buttons come through the holes in the faceplate.
Step four: Load plain white paper
  1. Pull out the input tray.
  2. Slide the paper-width and paper-length guides to their outermost positions.

  3. Insert the paper in the main tray with the short edge forward and the side to be printed facing down. Slide the paper forward until it stops.

  4. Slide the paper-width and paper-length guides inward until they stop at the edges of the paper.

      note:
    Do not overload the input tray. Make sure that the stack of paper fits within the input tray and is no higher than the top of the paper-width guide.
  5. Push in the main tray.

Step five: Load paper in the photo tray
  1. Lift the output tray.

  2. Pull out the photo tray.
  3. Slide the paper-width and paper-length guides on the photo tray to their outermost positions.

  4. Insert the photo paper in the photo tray with the short edge forward and the side to be printed facing down. Slide the paper forward until it stops.
      note:
    If you are using tabbed paper, insert the paper so that the tab is closest to you.
  5. Slide the paper guides inward until they stop at the edges of the paper.

      note:
    Do not overload the photo tray. Make that the stack of paper fits within the photo tray and is no higher than the top of the paper-width guide.
  6. Push in the photo tray.
  7. Lower the output tray.
Step six: Connect the supplied phone cord
Connect one end of the supplied phone cord to the phone port labeled 1-LINE on the back of the product and the other to a telephone jack.

Step seven: Connect the power cord
  1. Connect the power cord to the power connection on the back of the product.

  2. Connect the other end of the power cord to a wall outlet or surge protector.
Step eight: Set the language and country/region
  1. Press the On button to turn on the product.

  2. When Select Language displays on the printer screen, press the down arrow or the up arrow to scroll through the languages to highlight your language.
  3. Press OK to select the highlighted language.
  4. Press the down arrow or the up arrow to scroll through the countries/regions to highlight your country/region.
  5. Press OK to select the highlighted country/region.
Step nine: Install the cartridges
  note:
For first time use, install only the cartridges that came with the product. The ink in these cartridges is specially formulated to mix with the ink in the print head assembly at first-time setup.
  1. With the product turned on, open the cartridge door.

  2. Squeeze the gray tab below a cartridge slot to release the gray latch and then lift the latch.

      note:
    The cartridge areas are color coded for easy reference. From left to right, the ink cartridges are black, yellow, light cyan, cyan, light magenta, and magenta.
  3. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging.
  4. Hold the cartridge by the handle, and then slide it into the empty slot.
      note:
    Make sure that you insert the cartridge into the slot that has the same icon and color as the cartridge.

  5. Press down on the gray latch until it clicks into place.

  6. Install the rest of the cartridges in the same way.
      note:
    You must install all six cartridges. The product will not work if a cartridge is missing.
  7. Close the cartridge door.

Step ten: Align the cartridges
  1. After you close the cartridge door, a prompt displays to load plain white paper. Make sure that paper is loaded, and then press OK to start alignment process. The process takes approximately 5 minutes, and the product prints an alignment page.
      caution:
    Do not disconnect or turn off the product during this time. You might hear the product making noises.
  2. After the alignment page prints, check the display for status, and then press OK . Recycle or discard the alignment page.
