HP Deskjet Printers - Setting Up the Product (Hardware)

This document applies to all HP Deskjet 900 series printers.

Unpacking the printer

  1. Unpack the printer and the other items from the box.
    Some models include the two-sided printing module. If your printer includes the two-sided printing module, go to step two. If your printer does not include the two-sided printing module, proceed to the "Load the Paper" section.
  2. Remove the rear door of the printer by turning the knob to the unlock position.

  3. Insert the two-sided printing module into the back of the printer.

Loading the paper

  1. Slide the paper adjuster out as far as it will go.
  2. Flip up the OUT tray so that you can see the IN tray more easily.

  3. Place up to 100 sheets of paper in the IN tray.
  4. Slide the paper adjusters to fit snugly against the edges of the paper.
  5. Lower the OUT tray.

Connecting and turning on the power

  1. Insert the rectangular end of the power supply cord into the power outlet on the back of the printer.
  2. Insert the other end of the cord into an electrical outlet.
  3. Press the POWER button to turn on the printer.

Inserting the cartridges

  1. Open the top cover of the printer. The RESUME light will flash when the top cover is open.
    The part of the printer that holds the cartridges (called the cartridge cradle) will move to the center of the printer.
  2. Remove the tape from the cartridges.

    Do not touch the copper contacts (on the back of the cartridges) or the ink nozzles (on the bottom of the cartridges).
  3. Lift the cradle latches inside the printer.
  4. Hold the black ink cartridge vertically, with the copper electrical contacts toward the printer.
  5. Push the black ink cartridge firmly down into the right cradle.

  6. Hold the color ink cartridge vertically, with the copper electrical contacts toward the printer.
  7. Push the color ink cartridge firmly down into the left cradle.
  8. Close both latches.
    When you push down the latches, you will hear a clicking sound, and feel resistance.
  9. Close the top cover of the printer.
    The cartridges will move to the right side of the printer.

Connecting the parallel cable

  1. Make sure that both the printer and the computer are turned off.
  2. Hold the end of the cable with the notches. Match the shape of the end of the printer cable with the shape of the port (connector) on the back of the printer.
  3. Insert the printer cable into the port on the back of the printer.
  4. Attach the wire clips on the printer port to the notches on the end of the cable.
  5. Insert the other end of the parallel cable into the parallel port on the computer and tighten the screws.

  6. Press the POWER button to turn on the printer.
  7. If the RESUME light is flashing, press the RESUME button.

Printing a test page

Press and hold the RESUME button down for three or four seconds to print a test page. If the test page does not print, see a, b, and c below.
  1. If the RESUME button light continues to flash, press it again.
  2. Ensure the printer cartridges are seated securely in their cradles.
  3. Ensure the tape or packing material has been removed from the cartridges and the printer.
  4. If you press the RESUME button for too long, you may print several test pages unnecessarily.
