HP Business Notebooks - Battery Health Manager setting change

To optimize battery health and to help mitigate factors that can accelerate battery degradation, HP is changing the default setting in HP Battery Health Manager to the Maximize My Battery Health setting on select older models.

This change to the default setting is only available on select HP business notebooks. (For the full list, see Business notebook PCs affected by the Maximize My Battery Health default setting change). Changing the default setting to Maximize My Battery Health reduces the battery’s full charge capacity to 80%. Reducing the charge capacity helps to minimize stress on the notebook battery that might accelerate battery aging over time, while improving the overall health and lifespan of the battery.

Note:

Full charge capacity represents the maximum amount of energy that can be stored and extracted from the notebook battery. The full charge capacity naturally decreases over time as the battery ages.

About HP Battery Health Manager

HP Battery Health Manager is a BIOS-level setting that is available on most HP business notebooks. It is designed to help optimize battery health by mitigating exposure to key factors, such as a high state-of-charge and elevated temperatures, that can accelerate battery degradation and chemical aging over time.

To learn more about HP Battery Health Manager, see HP Business Notebook PCs - HP Battery Health Manager.

BIOS update to change the default setting to Maximize My Battery Health

BIOS update 01.17.01 changes the default setting in HP Battery Health Manager to the Maximize My Battery Health setting on select older HP business notebooks.

Maximize My Battery Health is the recommended setting for HP business notebooks that are as follows:

  • More than a year old.

  • Did not have HP Battery Health Manager set to Let HP Manage My Battery Health from the start of its deployment.

  • Continually plugged into AC power for long periods of time (for example, remote workers).

Why change to the Maximize My Battery Health setting?

As usage patterns for business notebooks have changed over time, HP has worked to identify the best approach to optimize battery health on older systems that might be impacted by these changes.

The Maximize My Battery Health setting is a simple and effective solution to help mitigate those factors that can accelerate battery degradation and chemical aging over time. BIOS update 01.17.01 automatically enables this setting on select HP business notebooks so that you do not have to enable it manually.

What to expect from changing the default setting to Maximize My Battery Health

Changing the default setting to Maximize My Battery Health causes the following:

  • This setting results in a reduced run time between charges, because it limits the charging capacity of the notebook’s battery to 80% of the currently available full charge capacity.

  • You will continue to see the battery charge at 100% in the Windows icon tray, with 100% representing the new, adjusted full charge capacity.

  • The change to Maximize My Battery Health has no impact on the system performance.

Note:

Before this update, Maximize My Battery Health caused the Windows icon tray to display a maximum charge of 80%. After the update, the Windows icon tray displays a maximum charge of 100%. This change was made to create a more user-friendly and consistent customer experience.

Note:

After this update, if you are running the Windows 11 operating system, a small heart icon is displayed in the Windows icon tray. This heart icon indicates that a battery health feature has been enabled.

Changing from the Maximize My Battery Health setting

HP recommends the Maximize My Battery Health setting for select older HP business notebooks. After updating the BIOS, you can change the setting in HP Battery Health Manager to Let HP Manage My Battery Health or Maximize My Battery Duration (available on select older models) at any time. Changing the setting from Maximize My Battery Health in HP Battery Health Manager does not impact the product warranty.

To learn more about HP Battery Health Manager, see HP Business Notebook PCs - HP Battery Health Manager.

Note:

Although the Maximize My Battery Duration setting is available in HP Battery Health Manager on select older models, HP strongly recommends that you do not use it, because it disables battery protection features in HP Battery Health Manager.

Update the BIOS

To update the BIOS to the most recent version, go to the support page for your notebook and download the latest BIOS update.

For more information, see HP Business Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System).

Note:

HP recommends that you periodically update your BIOS to the most recent available version.
