Set up the HP DeskJet Plus 4100 series or HP DeskJet 4100e series with USB

Set up your printer with USB if you do not have a reliable network connection or are having trouble connecting with Wi-Fi.

Follow the steps to connect the HP DeskJet Plus 4100/Deskjet 4100e series using a USB cable, and to finish setting up the printer hardware.

  1. Remove and discard all packaging, tape, and cardboard.

  2. Close the ink access door, plug in, and then turn on the printer.

  3. Connect a USB cable between the printer and computer.

  4. Follow the steps to load paper in the printer.

    1. Pull up to reveal the paper tray, and then slide open the guides.

    2. Load Letter or A4 paper, and then adjust the guides.

    3. Open the output tray, and then pull open the output tray extender.

  5. Do the following to insert the cartridges.

    1. Open the ink access door. Remove the protective tape on both cartridges.

      CAUTION:

      Do not touch the contacts under the tape.

    2. Rotate the cartridges so the taller end faces towards the printer. Insert the cartridges and click into place.

    3. Close the ink access door.

  6. If you have not already installed HP software, install the required HP Smart software from 123.hp.com on a computer.

  7. Complete setup in the HP software to add your printer and begin printing.

    For Windows 10 or macOS:

    1. Open the HP Smart software.

    2. On the Home screen, choose to add a new printer.

    It could take several minutes for the software to find and display your printer. When it appears, select it in the list to continue setup. Follow the guided instructions.

    For Windows 7:

    Launch the downloaded software (HP Easy Start) and follow the guided instructions.

    Note:

    HP Smart is not available for Windows 7. You will use HP Easy Start software instead to finish setup
