HP LaserJet Pro - Set up HP Wi-Fi Direct printing

Learn how to connect your HP LaserJet Pro printer to Wi-Fi Direct and then print directly to the printer from your mobile device or laptop.

If your HP LaserJet Pro printer is a wireless model, you can use the printer's Wi-Fi Direct feature to connect and print directly to the printer from your mobile device or laptop. Connection to an established wireless network or the Internet is not required.

Note:

If you have a wireless printer model that was released between late 2011 and mid-2014, it might use the HP Wireless Direct feature, instead of the Wi-Fi Direct feature. To learn how to turn on HP Wireless Direct and connect your mobile device to the printer, go to HP Mobile Printing.

Use Wi-Fi Direct to print wirelessly from the following devices:

  • iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using Apple AirPrint or the HP Smart app

  • Android mobile devices using the HP Print Service plug-in or HP Smart app

  • Windows and Mac computers using the HP ePrint Software

The following videos demonstrate how to enable Wi-Fi Direct from the printer control panel and then print from Windows, Android, or an Apple iPhone or iPad directly to you HP LaserJet Pro printer.

Note:

These videos apply only to the following LaserJet Pro printer models: M304, M305, M329, M404, M405, M428, M429, M454, and M479

For all other printer models, refer to the sections below for the correct steps.

Step two: Configure Wi-Fi Direct settings (optional)

Configure the connection type, and also change the printer's Wi-Fi-Direct name, by opening the Embedded Web Server (EWS) and changing the settings.

Review the information in the following sections to learn about the Wi-Fi Direct settings that can be configured, and also how to obtain the printer's IP address that you will need to access the EWS.

About connection types

Learn about the different connection types.

  • Automatic: Allows any mobile device to connect to the printer

  • Manual: Requires mobile devices to be confirmed at the printer control panel before they can connect to the printer

    Note:

The Manual option is more secure because before a connection can be established, the printer will prompt for a button to be pressed on the printer control panel, or an 8-digit PIN must be entered on the mobile device.

  • Advanced: Some printer models offer advanced settings to require users to enter a security code. Other advanced options include the ability to not broadcast or show the Wi-Fi Direct Name on reports.

About the printer Wi-Fi Direct name

In printer lists shown on the mobile device or computer, printers with a Wi-Fi Direct connection include "DIRECT" in the printer name by default.

In environments where more than one printer of the same model is installed, it might be helpful to assign a unique Wi-Fi Direct name for each printer to make it easier to identify the printers when using Wi-Fi Direct printing.

Obtain the printer's IP address

To access the Embedded Web Server (EWS), you must have the printer's IP address. Locate the IP address on the printer control panel using the following steps.

Example IP address: 192.168.0.1

Note:

The steps vary according to the type of control panel.
