HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise - Set up, install, and configure an HP Jetdirect 3000w NFC/Wireless or a 3100w BLE/NFC/Wireless Accessory

Learn how to set up, install, and configure the HP Jetdirect 3000w NFC/Wireless or 3100w BLE/NFC/Wireless Accessory to print wirelessly to a supported HP printer using Wireless Direct or Near-Field Communication (NFC).

For a list of supported HP printers, go to HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP OfficeJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise - Printers that can use HP Jetdirect print servers and NFC/wireless accessories.

Step one: Update the printer firmware

To ensure printer compatibility and maintain regulatory compliance, first update the printer firmware.

Make sure the HP Jetdirect accessory is disconnected from the printer.
Verify that the printer has firmware version 3.6 or newer installed. If not, continue to the next step.
Go to www.hp.com/go/FutureSmart and select Upgrade now.
Find the printer in the list and then click the associated link in the Link to Firmware download column.

A new page will display with a list of driver and firmware downloads that are available for your printer model.
Expand the Firmware section, locate the latest FutureSmart Bundle version, and then click Download.

For detailed instructions on how to update the firmware, go to HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP OfficeJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise - Update the printer firmware.

Step two: Connect the HP Jetdirect to the printer

Use one of the methods below to set up and install the HP Jetdirect accessory.

Note:

The method you choose will depend on whether or not the printer has a Hardware Integration Pocket (HIP2).

Method one: Connect the HP Jetdirect inside the printer in the HIP2

If the printer has a Hardware Integration Pocket (HIP2), use this method to install the HP Jetdirect with the short USB cable.

Note:

If you have an HP LaserJet Enterprise M506, then you will need to purchase and install an HP Internal USB Port accessory (F2A87A) in order to connect the Jetdirect in the HIP2. If you don’t have this USB architectural accessory, skip to Method two: Connect the HP Jetdirect outside the printer.

Turn OFF the printer, and then disconnect the power cord from the power outlet.
Find the short USB cable with the white 5-pin connector.

Locate the Hardware Integration Pocket (HIP2) on the printer.

Note:
The HIP2 is concealed beneath a rectangular cover. The location of the HIP2 varies by printer. Refer to the printer's user guide, if needed.

Using a thin, flat-blade screwdriver along either short edge of the HIP2 cover, gently pry the cover off .

Note:
If the HIP2 is already in use with another accessory, skip to Method two: Install the HP Jetdirect outside of the printer.

Connect the white 5-pin connector on the short USB cable to the HP Jetdirect.

Connect the USB Type mini-B end of the cable to the port inside the HIP2.

Insert the hook-shaped clips on the HP Jetdirect into the slots on the HIP2.

Gently press down on the HP Jetdirect until it is securely attached to the HIP2.

Reconnect the power cord from the printer to the power outlet, and then turn on the printer.

Note:
If a USB Error message displays on the printer control panel, make sure that the latest printer firmware is installed.

Method two: Connect the HP Jetdirect outside the printer

If the printer does not have a Hardware Integration Pocket (HIP2), use this method to install the HP Jetdirect to the outside of the printer using the long USB cable.

Turn OFF the printer and disconnect the power cord from the power outlet.
Find the long USB cable with the white 5-pin connector.

Push the long USB cable into the slot on the accessory cover, and then insert the hook-shaped clips on the HP Jetdirect into the slots on the accessory cover. Press down firmly to attach the HP Jetdirect to the accessory cover.

Attach the fastener strips (optional) to the bottom of the HP Jetdirect. Remove the backing paper in order to attach the bottom set of fastener strips to the top of the printer.

Place the HP Jetdirect on the printer, and then connect the USB Type-A (flat) end of the cable to the USB port on the back of the printer.

Reconnect the power cord from the printer to the power outlet, and then turn on the printer.
Wait until the printer returns to a Ready state.

Note:
If a USB Error message displays on the printer control panel, then make sure that the latest printer firmware is installed.

Step three: Verify that the HP Jetdirect is installed correctly

Use the printer control panel to verify that the HP Jetdirect accessory is installed correctly.

Note:

The steps vary according to the type of control panel.

FutureSmart 3 control panels

FutureSmart 4 control panels

FutureSmart 3: From the Home screen on the printer control panel, look for the Wireless icon . If the icon is displayed, then HP Jetdirect is installed correctly.
FutureSmart 4: From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Information icon . If the Wireless icon displays in the Information menu, then HP Jetdirect is installed correctly.

If the wireless icon is not displayed on the printer control panel, check that the USB cable is securely connected to the HP Jetdirect and to the printer.

After connecting the HP Jetdirect to the printer, the printer will appear in the wireless network list as the name of the accessory (Wireless HP Jetdirect 3000w or 3100w), or as "DIRECT-xx-HP..."

Step four: Enable Wireless Direct printing

Wireless Direct printing is typically enabled by default after the initial installation of the HP Jetdirect.

To confirm that Wireless Direct printing is enabled on the printer, choose one of the methods below, and then follow the steps provided.

Note:

To set a password for secure printing, or to manage other features, go to HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise - Manage an HP Jetdirect 3000w NFC/Wireless or 3100w BLE/NFC/Wireless Accessory.

Method one: Enable Wireless Direct printing using the printer control panel

Use this method to turn on Wireless Direct printing from the printer control panel.

The steps vary according to the type of control panel.

Find your printer control-panel type in the options below and then follow the instructions to enable Wireless Direct printing.

FutureSmart 3

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 3 control panel.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, navigate to and open the Administration menu.
Open the following menus:
1. Network Settings
2. Wireless Direct
Select Status, and then select On.

Note:
The default is On. To change the default password required to print, see the Configure security settings section near the end of this document.

The default for the Wireless HP Jetdirect IP address or Wireless Direct Name (SSID) broadcast is Allowed.

To restrict access, change the settings in the EWS (on the Networking tab under Wireless Direct > Connection Method) to Advanced, and then select Apply.
Select Save.
Obtain the auto-assigned password from the printer control panel:
1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select the Wireless icon .
2. Scroll down to view the Wireless Direct password.

You are ready to print. For instructions, go to HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise - Print using Wireless Direct or Near Field Communication (NFC).

FutureSmart 4

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 4 control panel:

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, navigate to and select Settings.
Open the following menus:
1. Networking
2. Wireless Direct
Select Status, select On, and then select Done to save the setting.

Note:
The default is On. To change the default password required to print, see the Configure security settings section near the end of this document.

The default for the Wireless HP Jetdirect IP address or Wireless Direct Name (SSID) broadcast is Allowed.

To restrict access, change the settings in the EWS (on the Networking tab under Wireless Direct > Connection Method) to Advanced, and then click Apply.
Obtain the auto-assigned password from the printer control panel:
1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select the Information icon .
2. Select Wireless Direct to view the Wireless Direct password.

You are ready to print. For instructions, go to HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise - Print using Wireless Direct or Near Field Communication (NFC).

Method two: Enable Wireless Direct printing in the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Use this method to enable Wireless Direct printing via the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Connect to the printer as a network connection:
1. Using a wireless computer, phone, or tablet, open the list of available wireless networks.
2. Select the "DIRECT-xx-HP..." printer, or the Wireless HP Jetdirect 3000w or 3100w, and then select Connect.
Locate the HP Jetdirect IP address on the printer control panel:

The steps vary according to the type of control panel.

FutureSmart 4 control panels
- FutureSmart 3: From the Home screen on the printer control panel, press or touch the Wireless icon to display the IP address or host name.
- FutureSmart 4: From the Home screen on the printer control panel, press or touch the Information icon , and then select the Wireless icon to display the IP address or host name.
Open the Embedded Web Server:
1. On your computer, open a Web browser, and in the address bar, type the embedded HP Jetdirect IP address or host name exactly as it displayed on the printer control panel.

2. Press Enter on the computer keyboard.
  
  The EWS opens.
On the EWS Home page, click the Networking tab.
In the left navigation pane, click Wireless Direct, and then turn ON Wireless Direct Printing.
Click Apply to save the setting.
Obtain the auto-assigned password from the printer control panel:

Note:
The steps vary according to the type of control panel.
- FutureSmart 3: From the Home screen on the printer control panel, press or touch the Wireless icon , and then scroll down to view the Wireless Direct password.
- FutureSmart 4: From the Home screen on the printer control panel, press or touch the Information icon , and then select Wireless Direct to view the Wireless Direct password.

You are ready to print. For instructions, go to HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise - Print using Wireless Direct or Near Field Communication (NFC).

Step five: Configure additional settings for the HP Jetdirect (optional)

There are additional (optional) settings that can be configured for the HP Jetdirect using the Embedded Web Server (EWS). The optional settings include enabling Near-Field Communication (NFC), changing the Wireless Direct printer name (SSID), and configuring security.

To access the Embedded Web Server (EWS), you must have the HP Jetdirect IP address. Locate the HP Jetdirect IP address on the printer control panel using the following steps.

FutureSmart 4 control panels

FutureSmart 3: From the Home screen on the printer control panel, press or touch the Wireless icon to display the IP address or host name.
FutureSmart 4: From the Home screen on the printer control panel, press or touch the Information icon , and then select the Wireless icon to display the IP address or host name.

Refer to the sections below for information on how to configure the optional settings for the HP Jetdirect.

Enable Near Field Communication (NFC)

NFC printing is disabled by default. To enable NFC on the printer, configure the setting in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) using the steps below.

In addition to the steps below, you can view the following video of how to enable NFC printing.

Open the Embedded Web Server:
1. On your computer, open a Web browser, and in the address bar, type the IP address or host name exactly as it displayed on the printer control panel.

2. Press Enter on the computer keyboard.
  
  The EWS opens.
On the EWS Home page, click the Security tab.
In the left navigation pane, click General Security, and then scroll down to Near Field Communication (NFC).
Select the Enable Near Field Communication (NFC) check box to enable the setting.

Note:
To require a WPA2 password to print, clear the check box for Show WPA2 passphrase in the NFC tag.
Select Apply to save the settings.

Change the Wireless Direct printer name (SSID)

The Wireless Direct printer name (SSID) is used to identify your printer when connecting from a Wi-Fi compatible device.

In addition to the instructions below, you can view the following video of how to change the Wireless Direct printer name.

Choose one of the methods below to change the Wireless Direct printer name (SSID).

Method one: Use the printer control panel to change the Wireless Direct printer name

Use this method to change the Wireless Direct printer name (SSID) from the printer control panel.

Note:

The steps vary according to the type of control panel.

FutureSmart 3 control panels

FutureSmart 4 control panels

Find your printer control-panel type in the options below and then follow the instructions to change the Wireless Direct printer name.

FutureSmart 3

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 3 control panel.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, navigate to and open the Administration menu.
Open the following menus:
1. Network Settings
2. Wireless Direct
Select Wireless Direct Name.
Enter a new name for the printer, and then press or touch OK.
Press or touch Save to save the new name.

To view the new Wireless Direct Name (SSID) on the printer control panel, press or touch the Home button , and then press or touch the Wireless button . The new Wireless Direct Name will display.

FutureSmart 4

Follow these steps if your printer has a FutureSmart 4 control panel.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, navigate to and select Settings.
Open the following menus:
1. Networking
2. Wireless Direct
Select Wireless Direct Name.
In the Wireless Direct Name text field, enter a new name for the printer, and then select Done.

Note:
To view the new Wireless Direct Name (SSID) on the printer control panel, press or touch the Home button , press or touch the Information button , and then select Wi-Fi Direct. The new Wireless Direct Name will display.

Method two: Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to change the Wireless Direct printer name

Use this method to change the Wireless Direct printer name (SSID) in the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Connect to the printer as a network connection:
1. Using a wireless computer, phone, or tablet, open the list of available wireless networks.
2. Select the "DIRECT-xx-HP..." printer or the Wireless HP Jetdirect 3000w or 3100w, and then select Connect.
Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS) in a Web browser on your computer.

Note:
For information on how to access the EWS, refer to the Before you begin: How to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) section further up in this document.
On the EWS Home page, click the Networking tab.
In the left navigation pane, click Wireless Direct.
In the Wireless Direct Name field, type a name for the printer.

Note:
In environments where more than one model of the same printer is installed, this option can be used to set each printer with a unique SSID for easier identification.
Click Apply to save the changes.

Configure security settings

To configure security, you must select the Wireless Direct connection method. Follow these steps to configure the connection method using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

In addition to the steps below, you can view the following video of how to set the Wireless Direct connection method.

Connect to the printer as a network connection.
1. Using a wireless computer, phone, or tablet, open the list of available wireless networks.
2. Select the "DIRECT-xx-HP..." printer, or the Wireless HP Jetdirect 3000w or 3100w, and then select Connect.
Open the Embedded Web Server:
1. On your computer, open a Web browser, and in the address bar, type the IP address or host name exactly as it displayed on the printer control panel.

2. Press Enter on the computer keyboard.
  
  The EWS opens.
On the EWS Home page, click the Networking tab.
In the left navigation pane, click Wireless Direct.
Select the Connection Method from the available options:

Note:
To secure printer privacy, select Advanced as the Connection Method.
- Auto – Assigns a password (not customizable); allows a connection to the printer and stays connected to a wireless network at the same time; limited security
- Manual – Assigns a password that can be customized; allows a connection to the printer and stays connected to a wireless network at the same time; increased security (default setting)
- Advanced – Assigns a password that can be customized; enables security features; restricted to single, peer-to-peer network connection using a direct connection to the printer; maximum security
If you selected Advanced as the Connection Method, select the check boxes for one or more of the following options (if desired):

Note:
When Advanced is selected as the Connection Method, the Wireless Direct Name (SSID) is changed and the printer can only be connected as an available wireless network which requires a password.
- Do not broadcast the Wireless Direct name
- Do not show the Wireless Direct name on reports or on the printer's control panel
- Do not show the Wireless Direct password on reports or on the printer's control panel
Click Apply to save the changes.
