SUPPORT COMMUNICATION- CUSTOMER ADVISORY

Document ID: c05834973

Version: 1

Advisory: HP Z8 and Z6 G4 - SATA Controllers Show a Maximum Throughput of 1900MB/s in Performance Tests.

Notice:: The information in this document, including products and software versions, is current as of the release date. The document is subject to change without notice.

Release date : 13-Nov-2017

Last updated : 14-Nov-2017

DESCRIPTION
The SATA controllers have a theoretical maximum throughput of 2000 MB/s due to the architecture of the controller. The actual measured throughput is reduced to 1969 MB/s due to transactional overhead in the data path. SSDs with a 6Gb/s interface have a theoretical maximum throughput of 750 MB/s. With SATA bus overhead and individual SSD performance limitations, the actual write performance may be limited to 525 MB/s in performance testing. Due to these architecture limitations, it is possible to saturate the SATA controller bandwidth with a Four SSD RAID 0 volume.
There are additional factors that may also affect performance. The SATA controllers share bandwidth with other interfaces such as USB and PCIe off of the PCH. These other interfaces can further reduce actual SATA throughput to 1500 MB/s

SCOPE
Affects all Z4G4, Z6G4, and Z8G4 workstations and all Operating Systems. This is a hardware architecture limitation.
Systems:
  • HP Z6 G4 Workstation
  • HP Z6 G4 Workstation
  • HP Z8 G4 Workstation
  • HP Z8 G4 Workstation
Operating Systems:
  • Microsoft Windows 10 TH1
  • Microsoft Windows 10 RS2
  • Microsoft Windows 10 RS1
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Pro (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Enterprise (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Home Basic (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
  • SUSE LINUX Professional 8.2
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
RESOLUTION
There is no fix for this issue.
When performance of storage on SATA is important, it is recommended to not use high bandwidth USB devices or install high bandwidth PCIe cards in PCIe slots connected to the PCH.
