Fax from the flatbed scanner

Fax a document using the scanner glass.

Follow these steps for printers that have a touchscreen control panel with a white display background (M428fdn, M428fdw, M479fdn, M479fdw, M479fnw):

Place the document face-down on the scanner glass.

Touch Send Now.
Enter the fax number using the touch keypad, and then touch Send.

Follow these steps for printers that have a touchscreen control panel with a black display background.

Place the document face-down on the scanner glass.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Fax icon .
Use the keypad to enter the fax number.
Touch the Start Fax button.
The printer prompts you to confirm that you are sending from the scanner glass. Touch the Yes button.
The printer prompts you to load the first page. Touch the OK button.
The printer scans the first page and then prompts you to load another page. If the document has multiple pages, touch the Yes button. Continue this process until you have scanned all the pages.
When you have scanned the last page, touch the No button at the prompt. The printer sends the fax.

Fax from the document feeder

Fax a document using the automatic document feeder.

Follow these steps for printers that have a touchscreen control panel with a white display background (M428fdn, M428fdw, M479fdn, M479fdw, M479fnw):

Insert the originals into the document feeder face-up.

caution:
To prevent damage to the printer, do not use an original that contains correction tape, correction fluid, paper clips, or staples. Also, do not load photographs, small originals, or fragile originals into the document feeder.

Adjust the paper guides until they are snug against the paper.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Fax icon.
Touch Send Now.
Enter the fax number using the touch keypad, and then touch Send.

The printer sends the fax.

Schedule a fax to be sent later

Use the printer control panel to schedule a fax to be automatically sent at a future time within the next 24 hours.When using this option, the printer scans the document into memory and then returns to a Ready state to faxthe document at the specified time.

Load the document:
- If you are loading an original on the scanner glass, place it face-down on the left rear corner of theglass.
- If you are loading multiple pages in the document feeder, load the pages face-up and adjust thepaper guides so they are snug against the paper.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe right and then touch the Fax icon.
Touch Send Later.
Swipe the columns on the screen to set the hour and minute to the specific time you want to send the fax.
Enter the fax number using the touch keypad, and then touch Send.

The printer scans the document and saves it in the printer's memory until the scheduled time, and then itautomatically sends the fax.

Load the document:
- If you are loading an original on the scanner glass, place it face-down on the left rear corner of theglass.
- If you are loading multiple pages in the document feeder, load the pages face-up and adjust thepaper guides so they are snug against the paper.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Fax icon.
Touch Send Options.
Touch Send Fax Later.
Set the hour and minute to the specific time you want to send the fax.
Enter the fax number using the touch keypad, and then touch Send.

The printer scans the document and saves it in the printer's memory until the scheduled time, and then itautomatically sends the fax.

Use speed dials and group-dial, or phone book entries

Send a fax to an individual or a group that has already been added to the phone book.

Load the document onto the scanner glass or into the document feeder.

Touch Send Now.
Touch the Phone Book icon .
Touch the local phone book, touch the name of the individual or group entry that you want to use, and thentouch Select.
Touch Send to send the fax.

Phone book entries must be set up using the Fax Menu prior to using the phone book to send faxes.

Load the document onto the scanner glass or into the document feeder.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Fax icon .
On the keypad, touch the fax phone book icon.
Touch the name of the individual or group entry that you want to use.
Touch the Start Fax button.

Send a fax from the software (Windows)

The procedure to send a fax varies according to your specifications. The most common steps for sending a fax are as follows:

Open the HP Printer Assistant:
- Windows 10: From the Start menu, click All Apps, click HP, and then select the printer name.
- Windows 8.1: Click the down arrow in the lower left corner of the Start screen, and then select theprinter name.
- Windows 8: Right-click an empty area on the Start screen, click All Apps on the app bar, and then select theprinter name.
- Windows 7: From the computer desktop, click Start, select All Programs, click HP, click the folder for the printer, and then select the printer name.
In the HP Printer Assistant, select Fax, and then select Send Fax.

The fax software opens.
Enter the fax number of one or more recipients.
Place the document on the scanner glass or load it in the document feeder.
Click Add Scan.
Click Send Now.

Send a fax from a third-party software program, such as Microsoft Word

Open a document in a third-party program.
Click the File menu, and then click Print.
Select the fax print driver from the print driver drop-down list. The fax software opens.
Enter the fax number of one or more recipients.
Include any pages loaded at the printer. This step is optional.
Click Send Now.
