As of this writing, there is no known issue with the USB controller on the notebooks listed in the advisory scope. As such, there may be a number of different factors that are affecting the data transfer speeds between the USB 3 drive and the notebook.
  1. Ensure that the cable connecting the two is inserted all the way into the USB ports on both devices. A partially connected USB 3 cable may only have the USB 2 pins connected, thus causing the data transfer speed to utilize only the maximum speed allowed by USB 2. Once the USB 3 cable is completely plugged in, the USB 2 and USB 3 pins are in contact.
  2. Check the connection with a different cable. If the original cable has been damaged, this can adversely affect the data transfer speed.
  3. Ensure that the USB 3 drive is operating correctly. An external USB 3 drive has a controller chip in it that connects USB to AHCI; this chip may require a firmware upgrade. Check the USB 3 drive vendor web site to see if one is available.
