HP 3115m Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Hard Disk Drive Assembly

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the hard disk drive assembly for the HP 3115m Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End-User should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.
Tools required
  • Small, smooth-tipped needle nose pliers (optional)
  • Tweezers
  • Small, Phillips-head (P1 and P00) screwdrivers

Part numbers are subject to change.
The replacement part number will vary depending on the hard disk drive assembly that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

Hard disk drive assembly removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2.   note:
    The following video depicts a specific configuration of the notebook. The same removal and replacement procedures apply to all configurations of the notebook.
  3. Using the black Mylar tab on the hard disk drive adapter cable, disconnect the hard disk drive adapter cable from its connector on the system board.
  4. Remove the hard disk drive adapter cable from the routing channel on the base enclosure.
  5. Remove the 5 mm P1 Phillips-head screw that secures the hard disk drive assembly to the base enclosure.
  6. Grasp the Mylar tab on the left of the hard disk drive assembly and lift the left side of the hard disk drive assembly up.
  7. Slide the hard disk drive assembly out of the hard disk drive bay and place it in a static dissipative bag.
Hard disk drive assembly replacement
  1. Remove the hard disk drive assembly from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Toe the right side of the hard disk drive assembly into the hard disk drive bay.
  3. Lower the left side of the hard disk drive assembly into position in the hard disk drive bay.
  4. Replace the 5 mm P1 Phillips-head screw that secures the hard disk drive assembly to the base enclosure.
  5. Using the black Mylar tab on the hard disk drive adapter cable, connect the hard disk drive adapter cable into its connector on the system board.
  6. Route the hard disk drive adapter cable through the routing channel on the base enclosure.
