HP Compaq nc4200 Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the keyboard for the HP Compaq nc4200 Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.
Tools required
Torx 8 (T8) screwdriver.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the keyboard that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP.

Keyboard removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Remove the T8-11 mm screw near the edge of the base enclosure.
  3. Remove the T8-11 mm screw near the center of the base enclosure.
  4. Remove the T8-11 mm screw near the docking station connector.
  5. Remove the T8-5 mm screw inside the docking station guide hole.
  6. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  7. Use a flat-bladed tool or your finger to lift the top edge of the keyboard and then slide the keyboard toward the rear of the notebook.
  8. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar to unlock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
    Important: Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  9. Remove the pointing stick ribbon cable from the ZIF connector.
  10. Slide the keyboard toward the front of the notebook and place it on the palm rest.
  11. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar to unlock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
    Important: Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  12. Remove the keyboard ribbon cable from the ZIF connector and remove the keyboard.
Keyboard replacement
  1. Place the keyboard right side up on the palm rest.
  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
    Important: Use care to prevent damaging the keyboard ribbon cable.
  3. Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
  4. Slide the keyboard toward the rear of the notebook.
  5. Insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
    Important: Use care to prevent damaging the pointing stick ribbon cable.
  6. Push the locking bar down to lock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
  7. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover and press the keyboard flat.
  8. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  9. Replace the T8-11 mm screw near the docking station connector.
  10. Replace the T8-11 mm screw near the center of the base enclosure.
  11. Replace the T8-11 mm screw near the edge of the base enclosure.
  12. Replace the T8-5 mm screw inside the docking station guide hole.
