HP Compaq nc6400 Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Expansion Memory Board
Minimum skill level
The End-User should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.

Small, Phillips-head (P0 and P1) screwdrivers

Small, flat-bladed screwdriver or a flat-bladed alignment tool

Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data. -
Remove the battery. Click here for instructions to remove the Battery.

Loosen the captive P0 Phillips-head screw that secures the expansion memory cover to the bottom of the notebook.
-
Use your finger or a flat-bladed tool to lift the edge of the expansion memory cover and remove it.

Push both arms outward simultaneously to release the expansion memory board to the spring tension position.
caution:
When handling a memory board, use care to prevent touching the memory chips on the board. Touching the memory chips could damage or destroy the memory. -
Grasp the expansion memory board by the edges and pull gently to remove it.

Place the expansion memory board in a static dissipative bag.

Remove the expansion memory board from the static dissipative bag.
-
Locate the alignment slot and align it to the empty board receptacle.
-
Grasp the expansion memory board by the edges and push gently to replace it.
caution:
When handling a memory board, use care to prevent touching the memory chips on the board. Touching the memory chips could damage or destroy the memory. -
Press the expansion memory board down to latch the arms.

Toe the expansion memory cover into the enclosure.

Tighten the captive P0 Phillips-head screw.

Loosen the captive P0 Phillips-head screw that secures the expansion memory cover to the bottom of the notebook.
-
Use your finger or a flat-bladed tool to lift the edge of the expansion memory cover and remove it.
-
Remove the expansion memory board from the static dissipative bag.
-
Locate the alignment slot and align it to the empty board receptacle.
-
Grasp the expansion memory board by the edge and push gently to install it.
caution:
When handling a memory board, use care to prevent touching the memory chips on the board. Touching the memory chips could damage or destroy the memory. -
Press the expansion memory board down to latch the arms.

Toe the expansion memory cover into the enclosure.
-
Tighten the captive P0 Phillips-head screw.
Verifying successful repair
Power on the server and verify that the BIOS memory and processor messages are displayed on the monitor during the boot process.
