HP Compaq 6735s Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the Keyboard for the HP Compaq 6735s Notebook PC.

Minimum skill level

The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

Tools required

Small Torx T8 screwdriver.

note:

Keyboard removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Remove the two 9 mm T8 Torx screws from near the back corners of the notebook that secure the switch cover to the base enclosure.
  3. Remove the three 3 mm T8 Torx screws inside the battery bay.
  4. Remove the two 7 mm T8 Torx screws marked with a keyboard icon on either side of the memory compartment that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  5. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  6. Pull up on the outer edges of the switch cover to detach it from the base enclosure and move it away from the top edge of the keyboard. Do not remove the switch cover.
  7. Lift the top edge of the keyboard and move it toward the back of the notebook to expose the keyboard ribbon cable and the ZIF connector on the system board.
  8. Using minimal force, flip the locking bar up on the ZIF connector and disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable from the system board.
    note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  9. Remove the keyboard.

Keyboard replacement

  1. Hold the keyboard over the top cover and insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the ZIF connector on the system board.
  2. Push the locking bar down to lock the ZIF connector.
  3. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the slots on the top cover and lower the keyboard into place.
  4. Place the switch cover into position on the top cover.
  5. Press along the entire length of the switch cover to snap it into place.
  6. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  7. Ensure that all of the switch cover tabs are snapped into place by pressing along the rear edge of the battery bay.
  8. Replace the two 7 mm T8 Torx screws marked with a keyboard icon on either side of the memory compartment that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  9. Replace the three 3 mm T8 Torx screws inside the battery bay.
  10. Replace the two 9 mm T8 Torx screws near the back corners of the notebook that secure the switch cover to the base enclosure.
