HP Deskjet 450 Series Printer - Using Bluetooth

What is Bluetooth and how does it work?
Bluetooth wireless technology allows Bluetooth-enabled printers, computers, PDAs, mobile phones and other compatible devices to communicate over radio waves in the 2.4 GHz spectrums over short distances, up to 32 feet (10 meters). Unlike infrared, Bluetooth wireless technology does not require a direct line of sight between the sending and receiving devices.
Bluetooth technology uses tiny, short-range wireless radio modules that are embedded in devices, either directly or through an adapter, such as a PC card. When a print job is initiated from a Bluetooth-enabled PDA, computer or mobile phone, the device will list devices with Bluetooth wireless technology within range to which it can connect.

Why was Bluetooth chosen for the HP Deskjet 450 printer over 802.11?
Although Bluetooth and 802.11 are both wireless technologies, they are aimed at different markets and roles.
Bluetooth technology is designed for quick, seamless short-range networks and features better power consumption, small protocol stack, robust data and voice transfer, and an inexpensive price. These same features that make it so suited for WPAN give it a disadvantage in WLAN terms, where it would be described as slow and limited. Likewise 802.11b is designed for infrequent mobility. IP-based data transmission, medium range, and high data rate make it an ideal choice for WLAN.
Even though Bluetooth has a much lower range and throughput than 802.11, its significantly reduced power consumption means it has the ability to be much more ubiquitous than 802.11. It can be placed in printers, keyboards, and mice to fulfill its original role, which is to replace short-range cables. It can also be placed in pagers, mobile phones, and temperature sensors to allow information download and monitoring in areas equipped with a Bluetooth access point.
