HP Compaq 6910p Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Wireless WAN Minicard

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the Wireless WAN Minicard for the HP Compaq 6910p Notebook PC.

Minimum skill level

The End-User should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.

Tools required

  • P0 Phillips-head screw driver
  • P1 Phillips-head screw driver

The replacement part number will vary depending on the Wireless WAN Minicard that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Wireless WAN minicard removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:

    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. If an EV-DO wireless WAN Minicard is installed, carefully disconnect the antenna cable with the blue heat shrink tubing from the AUX connector on the wireless WAN Minicard by grasping the connector with a small needlenose pliers or tweezers.
  3. Carefully disconnect the MAIN antenna cable with the red heat shrink tubing from the wireless WAN Minicard by grasping the connectors with a small needlenose pliers or tweezers.

    Use care when disconnecting the wireless antenna cables from the wireless WAN Minicard. Damaged cables or connectors can degrade notebook performance.
  4. Remove the two 3 mm P0 Phillips-head screws that secure the wireless WAN Minicard to the system board and allow it to release to the spring tension position.
  5. Grasp the wireless WAN Minicard by the edges and pull gently to remove it.
  6. Place the wireless WAN Minicard in a static dissipative bag.

Wireless WAN minicard replacement

nota:
Before installing the new wireless WAN Minicard, record the ESN number of the new EV-DO wireless WAN Minicard or the IMEI number of the new HSDPA wireless WAN Minicard. These numbers are located on the new Minicard’s label and is are required to reactivate the customer’s wireless service after the new Minicard is installed.
  1. Remove the wireless WAN Minicard from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Locate the alignment slot and align it to the board receptacle.
  3. Grasp the wireless WAN Minicard by the edges and push gently to replace it.
  4. Press the wireless WAN Minicard down and replace the two 3 mm P0 Phillips-head screws that secure the wireless WAN Minicard to the system board.
  5. Reconnect the antenna cable with the red heat shrink tubing to the MAIN connector on the wireless WAN Minicard.
  6. If an EV-DO wireless WAN Minicard is being installed, reconnect the antenna cable with the blue heat shrink tubing to the AUX connector on the wireless WAN Minicard.
    nota:
    • Use care when connecting the wireless antenna cables to the wireless WAN Minicard. Damaged cables or connectors can degrade notebook performance.
    • After installing the new wireless WAN Minicard, the wireless service must be reactivated by the customer. Provide the RTF card that is included in the wireless WAN Minicard spares kit to the customer. The RTF card provides instructions for using the new Minicard’s ESN or IMEI number to reactivate the wireless service.
    • To prevent confusion when the customer reactivates their service, it is a good practice to cross out the ESN or IMEI number of the original wireless WAN Minicard, located on a label in the battery bay, after replacing it.
