HP Designjet 4000 Printer Series - Upgrading Firmware

This document is for HP Designjet 4000 Series printers.
The printer's various functions are controlled by software that resides in the printer, otherwise known as firmware.
From time to time firmware updates will be available from Hewlett-Packard. These updates increase the printer's functionality and enhance the features that your printer already possesses. Firmware can be downloaded from the Internet and installed into the printer using the Embedded Web Server's Firmware update page (found in the Settings tab). Instructions for upgrading the printers firmware through the EWS (Embedded Web Server) are included in the EWS firmware upgrade instructions section below.
If you are unable to use the EWS because you do not have a TCP/ IP connection to your printer (for instance, when using USB or Appletalk), you can obtain firmware updates and installation software from the following Web pages:

EWS firmware upgrade instructions

  1. After the firmware update (a file size over 260 MB) has been downloaded, extract the contents of the downloaded file to a folder in your computer's hard disk. This is the file the upgrade process will send to the printer.
    nota:
The downloaded "ZIP" file cannot be used to update the printer.
  2. Use the Browse button on the EWS Settings screen to select the extracted "Firmware" file.
  3. Check that your printer is idle before proceeding with the firmware update process. The firmware update could fail if your printer is busy (for example printing a job or calibrating).
  4. Use the Update button to send the selected file to the printer. Your printer will show status on the front panel during the update, then it will automatically reboot. You may want to do a Printhead alignment on the media you intend to next use for printing.

  5. In EWS, you will see a status screen similar to the one displayed below.
    Figura : Firmware update status
  6. The printer will display the message Firmware update: receiving; while it’s receiving the firmware file. When the status bar reaches 99%, the printer will display the message Firmware update: Checking and the EWS screen will display a message confirming the firmware file was sucessfully uploaded.

  7. At this point, the printer will display the message Switching Power Off Please Wait…, then will display a wait symbol (sand clock) and a status bar while the menu LED stays steady, and the power LED blinks. Once the sand clock drops all it’s sand, you will see the front panel power LED light red for half a second & then hear a “beep;” unit boots with the normal status screen.
  8. If paper is not loaded, you will next be prompted to load it. Depending on the type of media you are loading, you may need to align printheads and perform color calibration.
