HP EliteBook 2540p Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the keyboard for the HP EliteBook 2540p Notebook PC.

Minimum skill level

The End-User should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.

Tools required

Small, Phillips-head (P00 and P1) screwdrivers

Parts required

Part numbers are subject to change.
The replacement part number will vary depending on the keyboard that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP.

The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Keyboard removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:

  2. On the bottom of the notebook, loosen the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws identified with a memory icon that secure the memory cover to the bottom of the notebook and remove the memory cover.
  3. Also, loosen the captive P1 Phillips-head screw identified with a wireless icon that secure the wireless module cover to the bottom of the notebook and remove the wireless cover.
  4. On the bottom of the notebook, loosen the seven captive P1 Phillips-head screws identified with a keyboard icon that secure the keyboard and switch cover to the base enclosure.
  5. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display fully.
  6. Lift up on the edges of the switch cover to disengage it from the top cover and position it to allow access to the top edge of the keyboard.
  7. Lift the rear edge of the keyboard and slide it toward the rear of the notebook to release its alignment tabs.
  8. Flip the keyboard toward the front of the notebook and rest it on the top cover.
  9. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar up on the pointing stick ZIF connector and disconnect the pointing stick ribbon cable from the system board.

  10. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar up on the keyboard ZIF connector and disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable from the system board.

  11. Remove the keyboard from the base enclosure.

Keyboard replacement

  1. Place the keyboard face down onto the palm rest.
  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.

  3. Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ribbon cable into the ZIF connector.
  4. Insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
      atención:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  5. Push the locking bar down to lock the pointing stick ribbon cable into the ZIF connector.
  6. Flip the keyboard over and toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the slots on the top cover and lower the keyboard into position.
  7. Align the edges of the switch cover with the edges of the base enclosure and press down along the length of the switch cover to secure it into position.
  8. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  9. Tighten the seven captive P1 Phillips-head screws identified with a keyboard icon that secure the keyboard and switch cover to the base enclosure.
  10. Replace the wireless cover by tightening the the captive P1 Phillips-head screw with a wireless icon on the bottom of the notebook that secures the wireless cover.
  11. Replace the memory cover by tightening the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws on the bottom of the notebook that secures the memory cover.
