HP Printers - Print Anywhere with the HP Smart App

This document is for HP wireless printers and devices with the HP Smart app.

Print Anywhere is a feature of the HP Smart app. It lets you use your Android or iOS mobile device, or Windows 10 or macOS computer to check printer status and send print jobs when you are away from your printer. If you have an HP+ printer, you can send print jobs for Private Pickup that begins when you confirm you are at the printer.

Print Anywhere is available for HP+ and select models of HP printers. You can check if your printer is compatible with Print Anywhere from the HP Smart app.

Step 1: Install HP Smart

See if your printer is compatible with Print Anywhere from the HP Smart app.

Download and install HP Smart from 123.hp.com.
Use Add Printer from the HP Smart app home screen to add your printer.
From the HP Smart app home screen, click your printer to open the printer information page.
If Print Anywhere or Enable Print Anywhere displays under Options, Settings, or Services, it is supported.

Step 2: Enable Print Anywhere

If Print Anywhere is already enabled, skip to Use Print Anywhere.

Enable Print Anywhere from the HP Smart app. Read the section that matches your operating system.

note:
Print Anywhere is automatically enabled on all HP+ printers or any other HP printer with print plans.

iOS and Android

Use the HP Smart app and your HP account to enable Print Anywhere.

Make sure your printer and mobile device are connected to your wireless network.
From the HP Smart app home screen, tap your printer.
Tap Enable Print Anywhere.

note:
If Enable Print Anywhere is not listed as an option, it is not available for your printer.
Sign in or create an HP account if prompted. If the printer is already added to an HP account, sign in with those credentials.

note:
If your printer is not claimed by any HP account, signing in or creating an HP account automatically claims the printer and enables the Print Anywhere option.

Print Anywhere is now enabled. If you do not see a confirmation screen, go to Why did enabling Print Anywhere fail in iOS or Android in Frequently asked questions (FAQs).

Windows 10 and macOS

Use the HP Smart app and your HP account to enable Print Anywhere.

Make sure your printer and computer are connected to your wireless network.
Click the account icon to sign in or create an HP account.
From the HP Smart app home screen, click Printer Settings.
On the Print Anywhere tab, click Enable.

note:
If your printer is not claimed by any HP account, enabling Print Anywhere automatically claims the printer.
Wait for a confirmation screen to open.
- If a confirmation screen does not open, go to the HP Smart website, sign in to your account, click Add Printer, use the Printer Code you printed previously to add the printer to your account, and then return to the HP Smart app to confirm Print Anywhere is enabled.
- If a confirmation screen opens, your device is ready to use Print Anywhere.

Step 3: Use Print Anywhere

Print remotely, check printer status, and make copies using your device camera when remotely connected with Print Anywhere. Use Print Anywhere features when you are away from your printer and your device is on a cellular connection or on a different wireless network. Some app features and printer settings are not available with Print Anywhere connections. Remote printer is shown in HP Smart with a green cloud icon

Print: Select the Print Documents or Print Photos tiles from HP Smart to print documents and photos. For Android and Windows 10 devices, print remotely from any app that provides a Print option on its menu. When printing from an app, the remote printer shows the printer email address.
Copy (Android/iOS only): Select the Copy tile to quickly copy, edit, and print a document or photo with your mobile device camera or web camera. Copies are not saved. This feature is only available on select printers.
Check printer status: Check ink cartridge levels, check your Instant Ink account, order ink cartridges, printer status, and more.

Share and manage Print Anywhere

Use Print Anywhere to set up your preferences. You can sign in to your HP account using a web browser to change your Print Anywhere settings.

HP+ printers

You can choose which printers are enabled for Print Anywhere and Private Pickup, and invite other HP accounts to share with your printer(s).

note:
Private Pickup is only available for printers with Print Anywhere enabled.

Click My HP Account or Account.
Click Manage HP Benefits, and then click Print Anywhere.
Enable Print Anywhere and Private Pickup for your printer, from the displayed printer list.
Click Share My Account, and then click Invite to type an email address to send an invitation email.

Other HP printers

Send invites to other HP accounts to share your printer.

Click the printer icon to open the printer information page.
Under Options or Settings, click Manage Print Anywhere or Manage Access.
Enable or disable Share this printer with any HP Account user.
- If this option is enabled, any HP account can get remote access to your printer by adding it as a local printer or by using its email address.
- If this option is disabled, you can share remote access to your printer with other HP accounts by typing the HP account's email under Share remote access to the printer by email.
  
  An email invitation is then sent to the email address. Sign in to HP Smart app from the invited HP accounts to add the remote printer from device pickup window. For Android, you must add the printer as a local printer before they can use the remote function.

Receive invitation to use other printers

If you receive an email from hpsmart.com about shared HP Smart benefits, someone has shared a Print Anywhere enabled printer with you.

Once invited, the HP account has the following benefits.

Gain access to the printer after signing in to your HP Account. Sign in to your HP Account or create an HP Account with the email address that receives the invitation.
You can add the printer as a remote printer if you are on a different wireless network or mobile network.

note:
If you are using an Android device, you need to be on the same network as the printer to add it.
View the Print Anywhere and Private Pickup setting configurations for the printer. You cannot change the configuration.
If the printer is set to Require Private Pickup, you can send a print job to the cloud server, and then release the job when you are near the printer.

Otherwise, you can send the job directly to the printer remotely which starts the printing as soon as it receives the job.

Private Pickup (HP+ printers only)

Private Pickup is available only for printers with Print Anywhere enabled. Your print jobs are printed only when you confirm your proximity to the printer.

To enable or disable Private Pickup feature perform the following steps.

Click My HP Account or Account.
Click Manage HP Benefits, and then click Print Anywhere.
Enable Allow Printing from anywhere.
Enable Require Private Pickup.

A Private Pickup tile is automatically added once the Private Pickup feature is enabled.

Send Private Pickup print job

If Private Pickup is enabled, all your print jobs are sent to the cloud server. You must confirm the proximity to the printer before releasing the print job for printing.

note:
Private Pickup jobs can be sent from iOS, Android, Windows 10 and MacOS devices. Only iOS and Android devices can release the private pickup jobs.

Releasing print jobs

Your mobile device receives a notification when a Private Pickup job is successfully submitted to the cloud server.

A notification is also sent to the mobile device with an option to release the job or to open the job queue when you are close the printer.

Click the Private Pickup tile to view all the submitted jobs with time stamp.

The jobs are kept in the cloud server for 72 hours. You can choose to print or delete any of the jobs.

What are the Print Anywhere requirements?

The following requirements must be met before you can use Print Anywhere.

Android and iOS

A printer connected to your wireless network that supports Print Anywhere
HP Smart app version 8.0 or later (HP+ only)
HP Smart app version 7.0 or later (all other supported printers)
Android: HP Print Service Plugin version 20.3 or later

Windows 10

A printer connected to your wireless network that supports Print Anywhere
HP Smart app version 120.1 or later (HP+ only)
HP Smart app version 110.1 or later (all other supported printers)

macOS

A printer connected to your wireless network that supports Print Anywhere
HP Smart app version 5.5.1 or later (HP+ only)
HP Smart app version 4.6 or later (all other supported printers)

Can I use Print Anywhere on my other devices?

Yes. You can sign in to the HP Smart app across multiple devices to print remotely.

Why did enabling Print Anywhere fail in iOS or Android?

Enabling Print Anywhere on an iOS or Android might fail if the printer is already added to an HP account and you did not sign in with the same credentials.

Sign in with the credentials of the HP account for your printer, or remove the printer from the other account, and then enable Print Anywhere again.

Why does Print Anywhere not work as expected?

Print Anywhere might not work as expected for different reasons.

Inconsistent connectivity: Cellular or remote wireless networks might be less stable and consistent than your local network.
Unable to access some printer settings: Not all features of the HP Smart app are available when using Print Anywhere.

Why can’t I print from Android apps using Print Anywhere?

The following requirements must be met to print remotely from an app.

HP Smart must be installed, and Print Anywhere enabled for the printer.
The HP Print Service Plugin must be installed (when you install the HP Smart app it prompts you to install or update the plugin if required).
The Android app you wish to print from must have a Print option in its menu.
After you select Print in the Android app, select the printer enabled as HP Print Service - Remote printer.

Why does my printer show as offline, or not show up at all?

Sometimes miscommunication between the printer and the HP Smart app occurs. Make sure the following requirements are met.

note:
Printer discovery and status updates can take up to 45 seconds. If you are using a cellular or different wireless network, wait several seconds, and then try again. Swipe down on the Home screen to force a refresh.

The mobile device is connected to a network or data is enabled.
The printer is connected to a wireless network with internet access and Web Services is enabled on the printer.
You are signed in to the HP Smart app with the same credentials used to claim the printer.
Android and iOS: Location permissions for the HP Smart app are enabled, and make sure the printer was added to the HP Smart app while using the same wireless network as your mobile device.
Windows 10 and macOS: Your computer is connected to a network that has Internet access.

Why did my print job fail?

Print Anywhere jobs can fail because of network connectivity issues, printer errors, or support issues.

Cannot print: The file type might be too large, password protected, or not supported.

Remove passwords from files you want to print, confirm they are one of the following supported file types.
- Android: JPG, PNG, PDF
- Apple iOS: JPG, PNG, PDF, DOC, PPT, XLS
- Windows 10 and macOS: JPG/JPEG, PNG, BMP, PDF, PPT/PPTX, DOC/DOCX, XLS/XLSX
Error message displays: If the print job was blocked by an error, such as low ink levels, paper jam, or connection issues, the HP Smart app displays a notification.

If you are unable to resolve the issue immediately, you can use the HP Smart app to scan documents to save or share, but you cannot print until you resolve the issue.

note:
If a print job is blocked for more than 5 minutes, the HP Smart app cancels the job automatically.

Why does my Printer Code not work?

When you add your printer to an HP account, you might see an Invalid Code message when using an invalid Printer Code, or if the printer is already claimed by another HP account.

Make sure your printer has not already been added to another HP account.

If the printer is not connected to another account, print another Print Info Page to generate a new Printer Code, and then try to add the printer again.
If the printer is connected to another account, you can either remove it from that account and then add it to your account, or you can use the credentials of the other account when you sign into the HP Smart app.

How do I install the HP Smart app?

Download the HP Smart app from HP.

Make sure your Android device is connected to the same wireless network that your printer is connected to.
Download and install HP Smart from 123.hp.com.
Follow the on-screen prompts to connect your printer.

How do I know my Private Pickup job sent to cloud successfully?

Check the print job from the Private Pickup tile from the HP Smart app home page, or check from the HP Smart app, Account or My HP Account, Manage my benefits, My private pickup job.

If HP smart app is unable to detect the Private Pickup printer, what can I do?

Do the following steps to solve the problem.

Wakeup the printer if it is in sleep mode.

Tap the Private Pickup tile to check printer status.
Turn off and turn on bluetooth on the mobile device, tap the Private Pickup tile to check printer status.
Close and open the HP Smart app, and then tap the Private Pickup tile to check printer status.
Turn off printer, wait for 1 minute, and then turn on the printer. Once the printer is ready in the carousel, tap the Private Pickup tile to check printer status.
