HP Photosmart D7100 Series Printers - Wrong Colors

This document applies to the following products:
  • HP Photosmart D7145 and D7155 printers
  • HP Photosmart D7160, D7163, and D7168 printers

Issue

The printer is working, but the colors on the printed output are not the expected colors. The output might look as if only one color has printed, as if a color has not printed, or as if the wrong colors have been printed.

Solution

Complete the steps below in the order presented to resolve the problem. It might not be necessary to complete all of the steps.

Step one: Check the ink cartridges

HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP ink. If the ink cartridges have been refilled, try replacing them with genuine HP ink cartridges.
If you have completed all of the steps above and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to Step two.

Step two: Check the ink levels

If the print defect is minor, it might be because the printer is in reserve mode operation. When the printer runs out of some colors, it can continue printing using the remaining colors, but the print quality might be affected. If cyan, magenta, or yellow is out, the printer can print only in grayscale.
note:
The ink levels in refilled or remanufactured print cartridges cannot be read by the printer. Instead of an icon, a question mark is displayed for these cartridges.
  1. Press Home on the printer.
  2. Press the 4-way arrow button to select Settings and then press OK.
  3. Press or to select Tools and then press OK.
  4. Press or to select Display Ink Gauge and then press OK.
  5. Each icon corresponds to the print cartridge that is the same color as the icon. The icons are also in the same order, from left to right, as the cartridges in the printer.

If any of the print cartridges are empty or low on ink, proceed to Step three.
If none of the print cartridges are empty or low on ink, proceed to Step four.

Step three: Replace the print cartridges

Replace the print cartridges that are out of ink or low on ink
  1. Verify that the printer is on.
  2. Raise the top cover.

  3. Squeeze the gray tab below a print cartridge slot to release the gray latch and then lift the latch.

    note:
The print cartridge areas are color-coded for easy reference. From left to right, the ink cartridges are black, yellow, light cyan, cyan, light magenta, and magenta.
  4. Remove the print cartridge by pulling it toward you out of its slot.

  5. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging.
  6. Hold the print cartridge by the handle and then slide the print cartridge into the empty slot.
    note:
Make sure that the print cartridge is inserted into the slot that has the same shaped icon and color as the print cartridge. The copper-colored contacts should be facing the printer as the ink cartridge is inserted.

  7. Press down on the gray latch until it clicks into place.
    Figure : Closing the latch
  8. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for each print cartridge that must be replaced.
    note:
All six cartridges must be installed. The printer will not work if a print cartridge is missing.
  9. Close the top cover.
  10. Press OK to start the print head alignment.
If you have completed all of the steps above and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to Step four.

Step four: Clean the printhead

note:
Do not clean the printhead unnecessarily because this wastes ink and shortens the life of the ink nozzles on the printhead.
  1. Verify that there is plain paper in the main tray.
  2. Press the 4-way arrow button to select Settings and then press OK.
  3. Press or to select Tools and then press OK.
  4. Press or to select Clean Printhead and then press OK.

Step five: Service your product

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.
