HP Inkjet Printers - Printer Does Not Turn On

This document is for HP inkjet printers.

The printer does not turn on or respond when you press the Power button. All the lights are off, and there is no noise or movement from the printer.

Depending on the printer model, the power supply might include a power module inside the printer (internal), a power module that is separate from the printer (external), or a rechargeable battery if you have a mobile printer. For steps to resolve the issue, choose your printer power supply type.

If the printer uses an internal power supply, make sure the power module, power cord, and wall outlet are working correctly.

Step 1: Reset the power module and test the wall outlet

Unplug the printer to reset the internal power module, plug another appliance into the wall outlet to test the power, and then reconnect the printer.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, power strip, or surge protector.
While the printer is unplugged, plug another appliance into the wall outlet, and then turn it on to make sure the outlet works.
- If the wall outlet does not work, plug the printer into an outlet that does work. Do not use a power strip or surge protector.
- If the wall outlet works, continue with these steps.
After the printer has been disconnected for at least 60 seconds, reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Plug the power cord directly into the wall outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector.
Check the rear of the printer and the ink cartridge access area to see if the internal power module has an indicator light.
- If the internal power module has a light, the light is on, and the printer turns on, you can stop troubleshooting.
- If the internal power module has a light and the light is on, but the printer still does not turn on, continue to the next step.
- If the internal power module has a light and the light is off, skip to the step to Test the power with another compatible power cord.
- If the internal power module does not have a light, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Test the printer Power button

Plug the printer into a working wall outlet, and then test the Power button on the printer.

Make sure the power cord is connected to the rear of the printer and is plugged directly into a wall outlet.
Press and release the Power button to start a Power On/Off cycle. Do not hold the button down.

note:
If you press and hold the Power button too long, the printer might turn on and then off without restarting. If this happens, press and quickly release the Power button again.
If the printer does not turn on, wait 10 seconds, and then press the Power button again.

If the power indicator remains off, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Test the power with another compatible power cord

HP printers use standard power cords built for computers and electronics. Find a power cord with the same connectors as your printer power cord, and then use the cord to repeat the steps to Reset the power module and test the wall outlet and Test the printer Power button. If you need to obtain a compatible power cord or you need to replace the power cord, go to the HP Parts Store.

If the printer turns on with a different power cord, the original power cord caused the issue. Replace the power cord.
If the printer does not turn on with a different power cord, continue to the next step.

Step 4: Replace the power module or the printer

If the printer still does not turn on and you have tried all the preceding steps, go to the HP Parts Store and check if a replacement power module is available for your printer model.

If a replacement power module is not available, skip to Service or replace the printer at the end of this document.
If a replacement power module is available, but you do not want to replace it, skip to Service or replace the printer at the end of this document.
If a replacement power module is available and you want to replace it, use the instructions included with the replacement power module to replace it.

caution:
Do not replace a power module when an indicator light is lit.

If you replace the power module and the issue still persists, skip to Service or replace the printer at the end of this document.

External power supply

If your printer uses an external power supply, make sure the wall outlet, power cord, and power module are working correctly.

Step 1: Check the compatibility of the external power module

Make sure the external power module is compatible with the printer.

If you need to replace the power cord or power module, go to the HP Parts Store.

Make sure the connector on the external power module cord is the same shape and color as the connector on the printer.

caution:
Never force a power cord to connect with an HP printer when the power cord is not compatible with the printer (different shape or size).
- If the power cord connector is not compatible with the printer, replace the power cord with a compatible power cord or power module.
- If the power cord connector is compatible with the printer connector, but the printer still does not turn on, continue with these steps.
Make sure the voltage and amperage specifications printed on the power module match the voltage and amperage specifications on the printer.

- If the voltage and amperage specifications do not match, replace the power module.
- If the voltage and amperage specifications match, and the printer still does not turn on, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Reset the power module and test the wall outlet

Unplug the printer to reset the external power module, plug another appliance into the wall outlet to test the power, and then reconnect the printer.

Disconnect the power module cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, power strip, or surge protector.
If the printer uses a power module with a detachable power cord, disconnect the cord from the power module.
While the printer is unplugged, plug another appliance into the wall outlet, and then turn it on to make sure the outlet works.
- If the wall outlet does not work, plug the printer into an outlet that does work. Do not use a power strip or surge protector.
- If the wall outlet works, continue with these steps.
After the printer has been disconnected for at least 60 seconds, reconnect the power cord to the power module, if the printer uses a power module with a detachable power cord.
Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector.
If the external power module has an indicator light, check the light.
- If the indicator light is off, replace the power cord. To obtain a replacement power cord, go to the HP Parts Store. If the indicator light is still off when connected with a new power cord, skip to the step to replace the power module or the printer.
- If the indicator light is on, continue with these steps.
Reconnect the power module cord to the rear of the printer.
If the external power module has an indicator light, check the indicator light again.
- If the indicator light is on, and the printer turns on, you can stop troubleshooting.
- If the indicator light is on and the printer still does not turn on, continue to the next step.
- If the indicator light was on prior to connecting to the printer but turned off when connected, you might need to replace the power cord. To replace the power cord, go to the HP Parts Store. If the power indicator light is still turned off when connected with a new power cord, skip to Service or replace the printer at the end of this document.
- If the indicator light is off, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Test the printer Power button

Plug the printer into a working wall outlet, and then test the Power button on the printer.

Make sure the power cord is connected to the rear of the printer and plugged directly into a wall outlet.
Press and release the Power button to start a Power On/Off cycle. Do not hold the button down.

note:
If you press and hold the Power button too long, the printer might turn on and then off without restarting. If this happens, press and then quickly release the Power button again.
If the printer does not turn on, wait 10 seconds, and then press the Power button again.

If the power button indicator light remains off, continue to the next step.

Step 4: Test the power with a compatible power cord

HP printers use standard power cords built for computers and electronics. Find a power cord with the same connectors as your printer power cord, and then use the new cord to repeat the steps to Reset the power module and test the wall outlet and Test the printer Power button. If you need to obtain a compatible power cord or you need to replace the power cord, go to the HP Parts Store.

If the printer turns on with a different power cord, the original power cord caused the issue. Replace the power cord.
If the printer does not turn on with a different power cord and the power module indicator light is on, skip to Service or replace the printer at the end of this document.
If the printer does not turn on with a different power cord and the power module indicator light is off, continue to the next step.

Step 5: Replace the power module

If the printer still does not turn on and you have tried all the preceding steps, go to the HP Parts Store and check if a replacement power module is available for your printer model.

If a replacement power module is not available, skip to Service or replace the printer at the end of this document.
If a replacement power module is available, replace it.

If you replace the power module and the issue still persists, skip to Service or replace the printer at the end of this document.

Mobile printer with a battery

If you have a mobile printer that uses a rechargeable battery, make sure the wall outlet, battery, and power cord are operating correctly. Watch the video and use the steps to fix your HP mobile printer when it does not power on or respond.

Use these steps to fix your HP mobile printer when it does not power on or respond.

Step 1: Test the power without the battery

Remove the battery to test the printer power.

Make sure the printer has been plugged into a wall outlet with the battery installed for at least two hours.
Depending on your mobile printer model, use the appropriate steps for removing the battery:
- Mobile printers with a battery cover: Remove the battery cover by pushing the battery cover latch to the right, and then pull the battery cover toward you to remove it. Once the battery cover has been removed, push on the battery latch, and then slide the battery out of its slot.
- Mobile printers without a battery cover: Slide the battery release slider on the top of the battery to the left. Pull out the right end of the battery, and then remove the battery from the printer.

Turn on the printer.
- If the printer turns on with the battery removed, skip to the step to check if the printer turns on with only the battery.
- If the printer does not turn on with the battery removed, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Reset the printer and test the wall outlet

Unplug the printer to reset it, plug another appliance into the wall outlet to test the power, and then reconnect the printer.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
While the printer is unplugged, plug another appliance into the wall outlet, and then turn it on to make sure the outlet works.
- If the wall outlet does not work, plug the printer into an outlet that does work. Do not use a power strip or surge protector.
- If the wall outlet works, continue with these steps.
After the printer has been disconnected for at least 60 seconds, reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Plug the power cord directly into the wall outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector.
Turn on the printer.
- If the printer turns on, you can stop troubleshooting and reinstall the battery if you want to use it.
- If the printer does not turn on, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Test the power with another compatible power cord

HP printers use standard power cords built for computers and electronics. Find a power cord with the same connectors as your printer power cord, and then use the new cord to repeat the step to Reset the printer and test the wall outlet. If you need to obtain a compatible power cord or you need to replace the power cord, go to the HP Parts Store.

If the printer turns on with a different power cord, the original power cord caused the issue. Replace the power cord.
If the printer does not turn on with a different power cord, skip to Service or replace the printer at the end of this document.

Step 4: Test the power using only the battery

Test the power on the printer by re-inserting the battery, disconnecting the power cord, and then trying to turn on the printer.

Depending on your mobile printer model, use the appropriate steps for reinserting the battery:
- Mobile printers with a battery cover: Slide the battery into its slot, and then push the left side of the battery until it clicks into place. Slide the battery cover into its slot, and then make sure the left side of the cover clicks into place.
- Mobile printers without a battery cover: Reinstall the battery by inserting the left end into the battery slot, and then pushing the battery into the battery slot until it clicks into place.

Wait 15 minutes to make sure the printer charges the battery, and then disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Turn on the printer.
- If the printer turns on, you can stop troubleshooting.
- If the printer does not turn on, click Contact Support on this page for more information about replacing the battery.

Service or replace the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
