HP Printers - Error Indicates Faulty Printhead

This document is for HP inkjet printers.
The printer does not print, and a printhead error message displays on the computer or printer control panel.
In many cases, the only way to resolve a printhead failure is to replace the printhead, if it is replaceable. If the printhead is not replaceable, the entire printer must be replaced or serviced.
note:
If your printer has an ink tank that you refill with bottled ink, go to HP Smart Tank 500, 600 Printers - Printhead Errors.
Examples of printhead errors:
  • Incompatible Printhead
  • Missing or Failed Printhead
  • Printhead Appears to be Missing or Damaged
  • Printhead Failure
  • Printhead is Missing, Not Detected, or Not Properly Installed
  • Printhead Missing or Damaged

Step 1: Reset the printer

Reset the printer to try and recover from printer failures.
  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.
    note:
HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Step 2: Identify your ink cartridges

Follow the steps for the cartridges that most resemble your cartridges.
