HP LaserJet M118, M203, M206 Printers - Paper Jam Error

This document is for HP LaserJet Pro M118dw, M203d, M203dn, M203dw, and LaserJet Ultra M206dn printers.

During printing the printer stops feeding pages, and the Attention light

on the control panel blinks. One of the following messages might display on the computer screen:

Printer paper jam
Paper Jam in Fuser
Paper Jam in Output Tray
Paper Jam in Duplexer
Paper Jam in Tray

Find and clear the printer of any jammed paper, or reset the printer if the printer has no jammed paper.

Step 1: Look for jammed paper

Confirm any error messages that display, and then use one of the following sections to find and clear any paper that might be stuck in the area of the printer indicated by the message. If the error message does not indicate a specific area, or no error message displays, use all of the following sections to clear jammed paper from the printer.

Clear jammed paper from the main input tray

When a jam occurs in the main input tray, the Attention light

on the control panel blinks and a Paper Jam in Tray message might display. Remove any jammed paper that is accessible from the main input tray area.

Remove any loose paper from the input tray.
Use both hands to remove any jammed paper from the input tray.
Load paper into the input tray.
Try to print again.

If the error persists, check for jammed paper in another area of the printer.

Clear jammed paper from the toner cartridge area

When a jam occurs in the toner cartridge area, the Attention light

on the control panel blinks and a Paper Jam in Fuser message might display. Remove any jammed paper that is accessible from the toner cartridge area.

Turn off the printer, and then unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
Open the top cover.
Remove the toner cartridge.

note:
M206 printers: Remove the imaging drum and the toner cartridge together.
Remove the imaging drum.
Use both hands to remove any jammed paper from the toner cartridge area.
Press the green button to lower the jam-access cover.
Remove any jammed paper.
Close the jam-access cover.
Align the imaging drum with the tracks inside the printer, and then gently push the imaging drum until it snaps into place.

note:
M206 printers: Insert the imaging drum and the toner cartridge together.
Align the toner cartridge with the tracks inside the printer, and then push the toner cartridge until it is firmly seated.
Close the top cover.
Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet, and then turn on the printer.
Try to print again.

If the error persists, check for jammed paper in another area of the printer.

Clear jammed paper from the output bin

When a jam occurs in the output bin area, the Attention light

on the control panel blinks and a Paper Jam in Output Tray message might display. Remove any jammed paper that is accessible from the output bin area.

Use both hands to remove any jammed paper or objects from the output bin.
Try to print again.

If the error persists, check for jammed paper in another area of the printer.

Clear jammed paper from the duplexer area

When a jam occurs in the duplexer area, the Attention light

on the control panel blinks and a Paper Jam in Duplexer message might display. Remove any jammed paper that is accessible from the duplexer area.

Open the rear door.
Use both hands to remove any jammed paper from the duplexer area.
Close the rear door.
Try to print again.

If the error persists, check for jammed paper in another area of the printer.

Clear jammed paper from the priority input tray

When a jam occurs in the priority input tray area, the Attention light

on the control panel blinks and a Paper Jam in Tray message might display. Remove any jammed paper that is accessible from the priority input tray area.

Use both hands to remove any jammed paper or objects from the priority input tray.
Try to print again.

If you have removed all jammed paper from the printer and the error persists, continue to the next step to reset the printer.

Step 2: Reset the printer

Sometimes a paper jam error persists even though there is no jammed paper (false paper jam).

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the power source.
Wait 60 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

note:
HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Step 3: Use genuine HP toner cartridges

Non-HP cartridges can cause paper jams. If you have non-HP toner cartridges installed, install genuine HP toner cartridges. For more information, go to Replacing Toner Cartridges.

Step 4: Try to print again

Try to print again to make sure the hardware functions correctly. If the problem persists, continue to the next step.

Step 5: Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
