HP Notebook PCs - Notebook Battery Stops Charging at Random or Unpredictable Intervals

Notice:: The information in this document, including products and software versions, is current as of the release date. The document is subject to change without notice.

Release date : 27-Mar-2012

Last updated : 25-Nov-2015

DESCRIPTION
The battery stops charging at random or unpredictable intervals. This usually occurs when a temperature threshold is crossed, such as when the battery becomes extremely hot or very cold.

SCOPE
HP Notebook PCs with lithium-ion batteries.
RESOLUTION
Attempting to charge the battery in conditions outside of the suggested operational temperature range on the product specifications is not recommended.
Please note the following:
  • At 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), the battery does not charge.
  • From 1 degree Celsius (33.8 degrees Fahrenheit) to 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit), the battery charges very slowly. This is a natural limitation of battery cell technology.
  • At 45 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit), battery charging stops. Once the battery cools to a temperature below this threshold, charging resumes.
Battery cells do not accumulate heat during the charging process. As such, charging the battery does not cause the battery to exceed the temperature threshold. Battery cells only accumulate heat during the discharge process (using battery power and not AC power.)
To monitor the notebook battery, use HP Support Assistant. For more information or to download the latest version, visit the HP Support Assistant web page.
Additionally, visit the web pages below for detailed information on using and caring for the notebook under proper environmental conditions:
