HP Enterprise printers - Troubleshooting the 33.05.XX "Security Alert" error messages

This document provides information about how to resolve error code messages when the embedded security features detect an issue in an HP Enterprise printer.
HP SureStart, Whitelisting, and Run-time Intrusion Detection are the three embedded security features available in an HP Enterprise printer running firmware version 3.7 or newer to prevent security threats. If a security event occurs, error code messages are displayed on a printer’s control panel and in the Event Log Page. Error codes for these security features include : “33,05.0X”, or, “ 33.05.1X”, or “33.05.2X”, where “X” denotes a variable.

33.05.0X HP SureStart errors

The 33.05.0X HP SureStart error codes display on the printer’s control panel and the Event Log Page when the downloaded firmware fails to validate the BIOS code. The following tables describe the HP SureStart error codes and solutions to resolve the issue.

No action is required.
33.05.08 Invalid boot attempt
33.05.09 Downgrade attempted
An error occurred when a printer in a “Ready” state with FutureSmart firmware bundle version 3.7 is downgraded to an older firmware version.
note:
The printer will not have downgraded when this error is displayed in the Event Log Page.
Downgrade the firmware from the Preboot menu using a USB flash drive.
For instructions, go to Update the firmware using a USB flash drive or the Embedded Web Server (EWS), and then follow the steps in the “Method three: USB flash drive - Preboot menu” section.
note:
To prevent removing the HP SureStart feature by downgrading to a non-HP SureStart firmware version remotely, a service technician or an administrator must downgrade the printer from the Preboot menu using a USB flash drive.

33.05.1X Whitelisting errors

The 33.05.1X Whitelisting error codes display on the printer’s control panel and the Event Log Page when a failure occurs when validating the firmware files digital signature or the firmware file certificate. The following tables describe the Whitelisting error codes and solutions to resolve the issue.

33.05.17 Security Alert
33.05.18 Security Alert
An error occurred with the firmware file’s digital signature, or an error occurred with the certificate used to validate the firmware file digital signature.
note:
When a Whitelisting error occurs, the printer will not restart to a “Ready” state. Make sure you have a backup of the firmware file so that you can restore the file after a partial clean to retain customized settings.
  caution:
Partial clean erases all data on the disk drive, except the Repository.
The Repository location contains a backup copy of the firmware file, but does not include any customized settings or third-party solutions.
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
  1. Perform a Partial clean.
    1. Turn the printer Off and then On.
    2. On the printer’s control panel screen, touch the HP logo when 1/8 displays below the logo.
      -or-
Turn the printer Off and then On, and when the HP logo displays on the control panel and all three Ready, Data, and Attention LEDs illuminate solid, press .
    3. Touch the down arrow to select Administrator, and then touch OK.
    4. Touch the down arrow to select Partial Clean, and then touch OK.
    5. Touch OK again.
    6. Touch the Back button , touch Continue, and then touch OK.
The printer will initialize and arrive at a "Ready" state.
    note:
If the printer does not arrive at a “Ready” state after performing a Partial clean, perform the task in step 2
  2. Download the firmware from the Preboot menu using the USB flash drive.
For instructions, go to Update the firmware using a USB flash drive or the Embedded Web Server (EWS), and then follow the steps in the “Method three: USB flash drive - Preboot menu” section.
