HP Printers - Mobile Printer Setup Fails (Android)

This document is for HP printers and Android smartphones and tablets.
When you use the HP Smart app on your Android device to setup your printer on your wireless or wired network but cannot complete the setup, use the steps in this document to troubleshoot issues that can cause wireless printer setup problems.
Step 1: Refresh the list of printers in HP Smart app
Even though the setup succeeded, it might take several minutes before the HP Smart app detects the printer on the network.
On the HP Smart app home screen, tap the plus sign to display the printer list.
  • If your printer is listed, printer setup is complete. You do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If your printer is not listed, turn off your printer, wait 60 seconds, and then turn on your printer. After your printer is idle and silent, open the HP Smart app on your Android device, and then check the printer list again.
If the mobile printer setup error persists, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Check network and printer status
Make sure your network is working correctly and that the printer is ready for the network setup.
  • Confirm the mobile device is connected to the network: On your mobile device, open the Wi-Fi settings and make sure your mobile device is connected to the wireless network you want to connect the printer to.
  • Confirm that the printer is ready for the network setup: Select your connection type.
    • Wireless network connection: On the printer, make sure the light next to the Wireless icon is either on and steady, or blinking. If the wireless light is not on or blinking, press the Wireless button, or open the Wireless network or Settings menu to make sure the wireless signal is turned on.
    • Wired network connection: Check that the cable is connected to the printer Ethernet port and to an available port on the router. The green link light should be steady, and the orange activity light should blink when the cable is connected.

  • Check the router band: Many routers can operate in both 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz frequency bands, but not all HP printers support both bands. Make sure the 2.4 GHz router band is enabled and broadcasting. If the router broadcasts separate network names (SSIDs) for each band, connect the printer to the 2.4 GHz band SSID.
  • Turn off the Smart network switch on Samsung devices: Make sure the Smart network switch option is turned off in the Wi-Fi settings or Advanced menu.
      note:
Not all Samsung devices have a Smart network switch option.

  • Turn off cellular data (Android OS 7 and later devices): Temporarily turn off cellular data during printer setup for best results.
  • Confirm the printer is not in energy saving or sleep mode: Make sure the printer is turned on and ready for wireless printer setup
  • Turn off nearby printers: If you have multiple wireless printers in the area, turning them off might reduce wireless signal noise during printer setup.
If the mobile printer setup error persists, continue to the next step.
Step 3: Set up your printer with HP Smart app again
After you make sure your network is working correctly and that the printer is ready for network setup, set up your printer on the network with the HP Smart app.
On the HP Smart app home screen, tap the plus sign to view the printer list.
  • If your printer is listed with HP-Setup > [your printer model series] under the printer listed, tap your printer, and then follow the on-screen prompts to set up your printer.

  • If your printer is not listed, tap My printer is not listed, tap Help Set Up a New Printer, and then follow the on-screen prompts to set up your printer.
  • If the mobile printer setup for your wired printer continues to fail, go to HP support for more help.
  • If the mobile printer setup for your wireless printer continues to fail, continue to the next step.
Step 4: Manually connect your printer to the network (wireless connections only)
Try connecting the printer to your network manually so the HP Smart app can find the printer. Select the printer control display type for your printer.
