When you surf the internet, you might encounter pop-up advertisements that can become distracting or annoying. There are a few things that you can do to eliminate pop-up advertisements.
A pop-up is a small web browser window that is displayed on top of the website that you're viewing. Pop-up windows often open as soon as you visit a website and are usually advertisements.
Web browsers have features called pop-up blockers that can prevent pop-up windows from appearing. In most pop-up blocker programs, you can choose the level of filtering that you want, select which pop-ups you want displayed, and build a blocklist of those you do not.
Some programs allow you to import blocklists from other users. The strongest filters block additional forms of web advertising, such as banner ads, and offer protection from intrusive spyware downloads used to track website visitors. Extensive filtering can slow down your browsing.
Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide software that can be used to disable pop-up windows. Check with your ISP regarding availability.
To close a popup window in your web browser, click the large X in the upper-right corner of the window.
Do NOT select any OK, Ignore, or Close buttons within the advertisement, because any action could be performed by the button.
If there is no X on the pop-up or browser window, press the alt + f4 to close the window.
The Microsoft Edge browser has a built-in function to disable pop-up windows that could be displayed while browsing the internet. The Microsoft Edge browser does allow extensions such as Adblock Plus.
Click the More actions icon in the upper-right corner, and then select Settings.
Select Cookies and site permissions, and then click Pop-ups and redirects.
Slide Block (recommended) to On.
In the Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers, you can install extensions or add-ons, such as Adblock Plus, that offer pop-up blocking features.
You might have software, such as adware or spyware, on your computer that is opening pop-up windows. To stop these pop-ups, you must identify the software that is opening the pop-up windows, and then remove it or change its settings to stop it from opening pop-up windows.
For information about detecting and removing adware and spyware, see HP PCs - Computer might be infected by a virus or malware (Windows 10).
