HP LaserJet Pro 3001-3008 printers - 'Out of Paper' error, printer does not pick paper

The printer does not pick paper from the input tray and an Out of Paper message might display on the printer software or HP Smart app.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Check the paper, and then reload it

Check the paper stack for defects, such as wrinkled, torn, or bent pieces that might cause a pick issue.

  1. Pull out the input tray drawer, and remove the stack of paper from the input tray.

  2. Remove any bent, wrinkled, or torn paper from the stack.

  3. Check for and remove any obstructions inside the input tray. Make sure nothing blocks the paper.

  4. Load the stack of paper into the input tray.

Check the paper size and type settings

If the paper settings do not match the type of paper loaded in the input tray, the printer might display an Out of Paper or Tray Empty error message. Change the paper settings from the print settings in the app you are printing from or from the HP Smart app.

  1. Open the HP Smart app, and then click Print Documents or Print Photos.

  2. Browse to the document or photo, and then click Print.

    The Print window opens.

  3. Change the paper settings to match the size and type of paper that is loaded.

    • Media Type: Select the appropriate type of paper, such as photo paper, plain paper, or labels.

    • Paper Size: Select the correct paper size for your print job.

  4. Click Print.

Paper size and type settings are applied.

Print a fuser cleaning page

Use Advanced Settings in the HP Smart app to print a fuser cleaning page and resolve any print quality issues including toner specks or spatter, smears, streaks, lines, or repeating marks.

  1. Make sure paper is loaded into the input tray, and then turn on the printer.

  2. Open the HP Smart app, and then click the image of your printer to open the settings and management tools.

  3. Under Advanced or Settings, click Advanced Settings to open the printer Embedded Web Server (EWS).

  4. From the EWS home page, click the Tools tab, and then click Utilities > Print Quality Toolbox.

    Clicking Print Quality Toolbox
  5. Next to Clean the Fuser, click Start.

Clicking Start under Cartridge Cleaning mode in EWS

A Printer cleaning is in progress displays on the printer control panel. The printer uses a single piece of paper to clean the fuser. The printer might take up to 3 minutes to complete the cleaning.

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.

  1. Press the power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  3. Wait 60 seconds.

  4. Connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and to the printer.

  5. Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.

To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.
