HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP OfficeJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise, HP Managed - Install HP print software on a Windows 8 computer using a USB cable

This document provides instructions on how to download and install HP full feature drivers and software, or the full solution software, on a Windows 8 computer when using a USB connection.

Note:

Not all printers have full feature drivers and software available. To find the recommended driver for your printer, go to HP Printers - Driver and software support for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

Before you begin

Full feature drivers or full solutions are recommended for most printers, when available. The full solution is a collection of software that includes the complete set of drivers, installer software, and other administrative tools.

The steps in this document are intended for customers who want the latest driver or software that is available for their printer, or want to upgrade from the In-OS or Windows Update print driver to more advanced features.

Before you begin, follow these instructions:

  • Do NOT connect the USB cable until you are prompted to do so during the software installation process.

  • Temporarily close any screen savers, or other software programs that are running on the computer.

  • Up to 400 MB of free hard disk space might be required to use this download. Make sure that you have enough memory and space on the computer to download the full solution, and set aside enough time to allow the download to complete.

  • If you need a smaller file because you do not have enough free hard disk space or internet bandwidth, use the print/scan or print-only driver (Basic, Host-based, PCL6, or UPD) available for download on hp.com. If these options are not available, use the InOS driver or the Windows Update driver.

About scanning

Scan software is not available for the printers listed below, and scanning is only supported via a network.

For the following printers, use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to scan in Windows 8:

  • HP Color LaserJet Enterprise CM4540 MFP series

  • HP LaserJet Enterprise M4555 MFP series

  • HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 MFP M525

  • HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 color MFP M575

  • HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M651 Printer

  • HP Color LaserJet Enterprise Multifunction M680 Printer

  • HP LaserJet Enterprise 700 color MFP M775 series

Step one: Download the installer files needed to run the USB installation

If Windows Update is enabled, you can also run Windows Update to automatically obtain and install the necessary files.

  1. Go to Software and Drivers, and then click Printer.

  2. Type the printer name or model number in the text field, and then click Submit.

  3. Select your operating system from the list if it is not automatically detected.

  4. Under the Driver - USB section, locate the USB (DOT4) communication driver for Windows 8 file.

    Note:

If the DOT4 driver is not listed, skip to Step two: Download the latest HP software and drivers.

  5. Click Download, click Run, and then wait for the process to finish.

    Note:

If you receive a prompt to install .Net, click OK and follow the steps to install it.

    Note:

Downloading a full feature or full solution driver can take some time. Please allow sufficient time for the download to complete.

  6. If you receive a prompt to install .Net, click OK and follow the steps to install it.

    Note:

If you receive an error message that .Net 3.5.1 is not available, or the installation fails when trying to install, refer to Download the .NET Framework 3.5 on Microsoft's website.

  7. Make sure the USB cable is disconnected from the printer and from the computer.

    Note:

Do not connect the USB cable until prompted to do so during the software installation process.

  1. Locate the .exe file saved to the computer, double-click the file, and then wait for the files to extract and the installation to start.

    Note:

If you receive a Windows alert from User Account Control, click Yes to allow the process to continue.

  2. Wait for the installer to launch and when prompted to automatically check online for updates on hp.com, click No.

  3. On the software End User License Agreement screen, select I have reviewed and accept the installation agreements, click Next, and then wait while the files are prepared.

When the preparation is complete, you might need to click Next to advance to the next screen.

  5. Make sure the printer is turned on, connect the USB cable to the printer and to the computer, click Next, and then wait while the port is created.

  6. Follow the remaining onscreen prompts to complete the installation.

  7. Click Exit to close the wizard.
