HP Inkjet printers - No black ink, wrong colors, other print quality issues
The quality of a printed document or photo is not as expected. The following tasks help resolve missing black ink, colors are faded or do not match the original, and lines or streaks in printouts.
Troubleshooting these issues differs by the type of ink cartridges your printer uses. Identify your cartridge type for steps to resolve the issue.
No black ink, wrong colors, other print quality issues (178, 364, 564, 655, 862, 902-920, 934, 935 ink cartridges)
Resolve print quality issues for printers that use HP 178, 364, 564, 655, 862, 902, 903, 904, 905, 906, 907, 908, 909, 910, 912, 914, 915, 916, 917, 918, 919, 920, 934, and 935 cartridges.
Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.
Run a Print Quality Diagnostic report
Use a Print Quality Diagnostic report to check if the printhead or ink cartridges need to be cleaned or if there is an alignment issue.
Run the automated printhead or ink cartridge cleaning tool
Clean the printhead and cartridges to resolve print quality issues including incorrect colors, streaks, and faded prints.

Load plain white paper in the tray.

Run the cleaning tool.

Printers with a touchscreen or menus: On the printer, open the Settings or Setup menu, touch Tools or Printer Maintenance, and then touch Clean Printhead or Clean Cartridges.

Printers without a touchscreen or menus: Go to 123.hp.com or your app store to install the HP Smart app. Click the picture of your printer on the home screen to open printer management options that include the cleaning tool.

If the page that prints has defects, the printhead might be badly clogged. Run up to two more cleaning cycles.
Check for issues with the ink cartridges
Low ink levels, using non-HP cartridges, and clogged cartridge vents can cause print quality issues.
Check the paper, print settings, and quality of the file being printed
Make sure your print job is set up for optimal print quality results.
Clean or replace the printhead
If your printer has a removable printhead, you can manually clean it. Otherwise use the steps provided to replace the printhead.
These steps involve removing the printhead from the printer. Be prepared to complete the cleaning steps within 30 minutes to avoid damage to both the printer and the cartridges.
Service the printer
Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
