HP Printers - Install and Use the HP Smart App (Mac)

This document is for HP printers and the HP Smart app for Mac.
The HP Smart app includes tools to print, scan, check ink levels, and set up your printer on a wireless network.
This document is for the HP Smart app on Mac. If you are using a Windows 10 computer or an Android or Apple iOS mobile device, go to Install and Use the HP Smart App (Windows 10) or Install and Use the HP Smart App (Android, iOS).

Step 1: Install the HP Smart app

Install the HP Smart app, and then add your printer.
  1. Go to HP Smart (in English) to download and install the HP Smart app on your Mac running macOS 10.12 or later.
  2. On your computer, open the HP Smart app, and then click the Plus sign .
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to add your printer or set up a new printer.

Step 2: Print or scan documents and photos

On the HP Smart app home screen, click a tile to print or scan an item from your printer, or scan images with the camera on the Mac.

Step 3: Manage printer preferences, messages, and supplies

From the home screen, click your printer to view the printer status, print reports, order supplies, change printer preferences, and access your HP Instant Ink dashboard.
Printer information, reports, and tools vary by printer.
  • View printer status: Confirm your printer is ready for use. A yellow caution triangle displays when the printer needs attention. You can also get printer information such as the printer's IP address, installation status, and network status.
  • Check ink or toner levels and order supplies: View the estimated ink or toner levels on the home screen. To order supplies, click your printer, click Supply Status, and then click Order Supplies.
  • Access the HP Instant Ink dashboard: Click HP Instant Ink to open your HP Instant Ink dashboard or enroll your printer in HP Instant Ink.
  • View wireless status and information: Click your printer, and then click Network Information to view information such as the printer's IP address, Wi-Fi Direct name, and network status.
  • Print reports and access tools: Click Printer Reports to print reports such as a Printer Status Report, Network Configuration Page, or Print Quality Report. Click Printer Quality Tools to perform maintenance actions on the printer.
  • Access the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS): Click your printer, and then click Advanced Settings to open the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  • Forget a printer: Click your printer, and then click Forget this printer to remove a printer from the HP Smart app.
  • Quick Reference: Click your printer, and then click Quick Reference to open the printer’s Essentials page or the printer homepage.

Step 4: Learn about additional features and resources

From the HP Smart app home screen, explore additional features of the HP Smart app.
Some features might not be available for your printer.
  • Print Anywhere: Use your mobile device to send print jobs over the Internet when you are away from your printer. Available on select HP printers. Go to Print Anywhere with the HP Smart App for more information.
  • Smart Tasks: Create shortcuts for printing, emailing, or saving files from the HP Smart app. Go to Using Smart Tasks for more information.
  • Mobile Fax: Send faxes from your Mac to a fax machine or fax-capable printer. Go to Sending Faxes with the HP Smart app for more information.
  • Play & Learn: Access free printable content for children, such as learning worksheets, coloring pages, puzzles, reading material, and more.
  • Help & Support: Learn about services available with your printer, such as HP Connected and HP ePrint, and search HP Support for how-to and troubleshooting documents.
  • HP Smart tab: Personalize your home screen and get further information such as privacy statements, data collection agreements, feedback opportunities, and more.
