HP Printers - Printing with Google Home

This document is for HP web-connected printers and Google Home.

To print pre-formatted content such as puzzles, forms, and coloring pages, enable the HP Printer app for Google Assistant.

Step 1: Connect the HP Printer app to your HP account

Use your Android smartphone or tablet, or Apple iPad, iPhone, iPod touch to connect the HP Printer app to your HP account.

I have an HP account

Link your HP account to the HP Printer app.

On your mobile device, open or install the Google Assistant app, depending on your mobile device.
- Android devices: Long press Home to open Google Assistant.
- Apple iOS devices: Go to Google Assistant (in English) from the App Store, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install and open the app.
On the Google Assistant screen, tap the Explore icon .

The Explore screen displays.
In the search field, type HP Printer, and then tap HP Printer.

The HP Printer screen displays.
Tap LINK.
Select the I agree with check box, and then tap HP Account.
Follow the prompts to sign in with your HP account credentials.
Select the printer you want to use, and then click Connect.

Your printer is now ready to print with the Google Home device.

I do not have an HP account

Create an HP account, add your printer, and then enable the HP Printer skill.

Step 1: Get the printer code

Connect your printer to the web, and then get the printer code.

Printers with a touchscreen or text-based display

Connect your printer to the web, and then get the printer code.

Turn on the printer, load plain paper in the input tray, and make sure ink or toner cartridges are installed.
Turn on Web Services:
- Touchscreen displays: On the printer, touch or press the HP ePrint button or icon . Tap Setup, and then follow the on-screen instructions to turn on Web Services.
- Text-based displays: On the printer, navigate to Web Services Setup, Network Setup, or Wireless Settings, and then follow the on-screen instructions to turn on Web Services.
If Web Services are enabled already, tap Print or Print Info.

The info page prints with the printer code listed. Continue to the next step.

Printers without a touchscreen or text-based display

Connect your printer to the web, and then get the printer code.

Android devices

Use the HP Smart app to turn on Web Services, and then get the printer code.

Make sure your Android device and printer are connected to the same wireless network.
Go to 123.hp.com to install HP Smart on your phone or tablet.
On the app home screen, tap the printer icon or the plus sign .
On the My Printer screen in the HP Smart app, tap Advanced Settings.
Tap Web Services, and then confirm that Web Services is enabled.
- If Web Services is enabled: The Summary option displays in the Web Services section. Tap Print Info Page, and then continue with these steps.
- If Web Services is not enabled: The Setup option displays in the Web Services section. Tap Setup, follow the on-screen instructions to enable Web Services, and then continue with these steps. An info page prints.

The info page prints with the printer code listed. Continue to the next step.

Apple iOS devices

Use the HP Smart app to turn on Web Services, and then get the printer code.

Make sure your Apple iOS device is connected to the same wireless network that your current printer is connected to, or that you want to connect a new printer to.
Go to 123.hp.com to install HP Smart on your phone or tablet.
On the app home screen, tap the printer icon or the plus sign .
Tap Web Services, and then confirm Web Services is enabled.
- If Web Services is enabled: Return to the Web Services screen, tap Print Info Page, and then continue with these steps.
- If Web Services is not enabled: Tap Continue, follow the on-screen instructions to turn on Web Services, and then continue with these steps. An info page prints.

The info page prints with the printer code listed. Continue to the next step.

Computer or Chromebook

Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to get the printer code.

From your printer, print a Network Configuration or self-test page.

For instructions on printing a Network Configuration or self-test page, search HP Customer Support for your printer model and "print a configuration page" or "print a self-test page."
Find the printer IP address on the Network Configuration or self-test page.
On your computer, open an Internet browser.
Type the printer IP address in the browser address bar, and then press Enter.

note:
Make sure to type the IP address into the browser's address box. If typed into a toolbar or search engine, the Embedded Web Server (EWS) does not open.
If a website security certificate displays in the Internet browser, click Continue.

The EWS information page for the printer opens, confirming the printer is on the same network as the computer.
On the EWS webpage, click the Web Services tab.
- If a Web Services tab is not available, your printer does not support HP ePrint.
- If a Web Services Setup page displays, click Continue, Turn On, or Enable, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
- If a Web Services Summary page displays, Web Services is already enabled.
  
  Click Print Info Page under Web Services Settings, and then continue to the next step.

The info page prints with the printer code listed. Continue to the next step.

Step 2: Set up an HP account and add your printer

Create an HP account on HP Smart (formerly HP Connected), and then add your printer using the printer code.

On your computer or mobile device, go to HP Smart.
Click Create Account, and the follow the prompts to set up a new account.
On the HP Connected home page, type the printer code, and then click Add.

If your printer does not display on your HP Connected homepage, click Add a Printer, type the printer code, and then click Add.

Step 3: Connect the HP Printer app to your HP account

Enable the HP Printer skill from your mobile device or computer.

On your mobile device, open or install the Google Assistant app, depending on your mobile device.
- Android devices: Long press Home to open Google Assistant.
- Apple iOS devices: Go to Google Assistant (in English) from the App Store, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install and open the app.
On the Google Assistant screen, tap the Explore icon .

The Explore screen displays.
In the search field, type HP Printer, and then tap HP Printer.

The HP Printer screen displays.
Tap LINK.
Select the I agree with check box, and then tap HP Account.
Follow the prompts to sign in with your HP account credentials.
Select the printer you want to use, and then click Connect.

Your printer is now ready to print with the Google Home device.

Step 2: Print with Google Home

To print with the HP Printer app on Google Home, make sure the printer is turned on and in a ready or standby state to accept print requests.

Say "Hey Google, ask HP Printer to print a Help page."

A one-page summary prints, which includes what content is available on your Google Home and other helpful information. Content you can print includes puzzles and games, notebook paper, and checklists.

note:

What are the requirements to print with Google Home?

To print with the HP Printer app on Google Home, make sure Google Home, your printer, and mobile device meet the following requirements:

An English Google account is set up for Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, United Kingdom, or United States
An HP account, with your printer added
Google Home set up and connected to your wireless network
An Android device running OS 6.0 or later, or an Apple iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch running iOS 9 or later
The Google Assistant app (Apple iOS devices only). Make sure to set your Apple iOS device language to English

Android OS 6.0 and later devices contain Google Assistant and do not need to be installed from the Google Play Store
An HP wireless printer connected to the same network as Google Home, and supports Web Services, such as HP ePrint. The HP Printer app does not work with USB-connected printers

How do I get help using the HP Printer app?

How do I disable the HP Printer app?

When you do not want Google Home to print, use your Android or Apple iOS device to disable the HP Printer app. You can re-enable the HP Printer app at any time.

On your mobile device, open the Google Assistant app, and then tap the Explore icon .

In the search field, type HP Printer, and then tap HP Printer.

The HP Printer screen displays.
Select UNLINK.

The HP Printer app is removed from your HP account.

What can I do if Google Home says, "Sorry, I don't know how to do that" when I make a print request?

Unlink the HP Printer app, and then relink the app to your HP account.

On your mobile device, open the Google Assistant app, and then tap the Explore icon .

In the search field, type HP Printer, and then tap HP Printer.

How do I ask Google Home to start a Shortcut?

Tell Google Home to ask your printer to scan a document or start a Shortcut that you named previously.

Examples:

Say "Hey Google, ask HP printer to start my Shortcut named Scan to Drive."
Say "Hey Google, ask HP Printer to scan to my Shortcut named Contracts."

Voice-activated scan, copy and Shortcuts not available on all printers.

How do I connect a different printer to the HP Printer app?

To connect a different printer, instruct Google Home to change your printer.

Say, "Hey Google, ask HP Printer to change my printer."

Google Home lists the printers on your HP account. When there is more than one printer, each printer is assigned a number. For example, Google Home might list "Printer 1: HP DeskJet 5520, Printer 2: HP Officejet 8040, Printer 3: HP Officejet Pro 8630...", and so on. To repeat the list, say, "Change my printer" again.
Say the number of the printer you want to connect.

Google Home confirms the selection.

Can I use multiple printers with Google Home?

Yes. You can use multiple printers, but you can only have one printer active at a time.
