HP Business Notebooks, Tablets, and Mobile Workstations - Batteries May Not Charge After Extended Storage Period

Notice:: The information in this document, including products and software versions, is current as of the release date. The document is subject to change without notice.

Release date : 12-Jan-2017

Last updated : 22-Jun-2020

DESCRIPTION
After storing computers for several months, the batteries may not work and cannot be recovered.
Batteries slowly drain, even when the computers are powered off. If left long enough, the batteries can reach a critical charge level beyond which they will no longer function and cannot be recharged (this is by design, for safety reasons).
NOTE: New computers arrive with the batteries in shipping mode to minimizes battery drain and allow the battery to remain viable for longer than if the computer is simply powered off. However, once the computer has been powered on it automatically exits shipping mode. Refer to the RESOLUTION for instructions for placing it back in shipping mode to allow for longer shelf life for the batteries (up to 3 months).

RESOLUTION
Once the computer has been powered on with an AC adapter, it exits shipping mode automatically. After this, the battery can drain to a critical level while in storage without AC power. If computers must be stored for long periods (e.g. over summer school break) use one of the following options to place the battery back into shipping mode before storing:
For HP Chromebooks
Prepare Chromebooks for long-term storage.
  1. Charge your Chromebooks so that the battery is at least 80% full. This ensures that even when the battery discharges while unplugged over the summer, it won’t fully run out of power.
  2. To slow the discharge rate during storage, do not physically remove the battery from the Chromebook for storage. Instead, take the following steps:
a. Connect the device to a charger and turn it on.
b. Hold Refresh and Power Power at the same time.
c. While holding these keys, remove the power cable from device and then release the keys. The device should shut down and remain off.
d. Confirm the battery disconnect worked by pressing the power button. The device should not power on, despite having a battery charge. The Chromebook won’t power on by touching the power button or opening the lid, until you plug the device back to a power source.
This is the ideal way to store devices. It reduces battery discharge to a minimum, prevents constant charge and discharge from reducing the battery life, and keeps the Chromebook in a stable, powered-off state.
NOTE: If you can’t put your model of Chromebook into the battery disconnect state described above, charge the battery to at least 80%. Then, turn off the Chromebook, unplug it from a power source, and store it in a cool, dry place.
For Windows OS HP Notebooks
Perform the following steps before enabling battery ship mode.
  1. Upgrade the BIOS to the latest version or at least to the minimum version shown in Table A below.

  6. The computer will either:Power off and be in shiping mode or Boot into windows and then enter shipping mode the next time it is shut down
Option 2:Set shipping mode in the BIOS (F10).

  2. Power on the computer.
  3. Press F10 to enter the BIOS.

  8. Press F10 to save the changes.
  9. Restart the computer and load the OS.
  10. Shut the computer down.
  11. Wait 2 seconds then remove AC adapter. The unit should be placed in battery ship mode.
Option 3: Set shipping mode using the BCU (BIOS Configuration Utility).
  1. Power on the computer and connect the power adapter.
  2. Execute HPQPswd.exe to create the BIOS admin password BIN file.
  3. Execute HPBIOSUPDREC.exe with the BIOS admin password BIN file just created to set the BIOS admin password.
  4. Restart the computer and load the OS.
  5. Set the option Disable battery on next shut down to Next shut down by executing HPBIOSUPDREC.exe with BIOS admin password BIN file.
  6. Clear the BIOS admin password by executing HPBIOSUPDREC.exe with the BIN file.
  7. Shut the computer down.
  8. Wait 2 seconds then remove AC adapter. The unit should be placed in Ship mode.
IMPORTANT: For very long term storage, HP recommends checking computers every 3 months to check the battery charge level. If battery charge has fallen below 50%, charge them back up to 80~90% and repeat the procedure to put them back into shipping mode.
NOTE: To exit shipping mode for normal use, plug in the AC adapter and press the power button to power the computer on.
