HP OfficeJet Pro 8210 Printers - Ink Cartridge Errors

This document is for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8210, 8216, and 8218 printers.
The printer does not print, and one of the following error messages displays on the printer control panel:
  • Cartridge Problem
  • Incompatible Cartridge
  • Missing Cartridge
  caution:
You must install the SETUP ink cartridges that came with your printer during the initial printer setup or an ink cartridge error occurs.
Step 1: Make sure the ink cartridges are compatible
HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP ink cartridges or refilled HP ink cartridges. Make sure you are using the correct HP ink cartridge for your printer.
  note:
This printer is enabled with dynamic security. It is intended to be used only with cartridges with an original HP chip. Ink cartridges using a non-HP chip may not work, and those that work today may not work in the future. For more information see Dynamic Security Enabled Printers.
Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.
To purchase ink cartridges through other retailers, make note of the following ink cartridges that work with your printer.

If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step 3: Clean the ink cartridge contacts
Clean the ink cartridge contacts to remove debris that might be preventing an electrical connection.
  caution:
Clean the ink cartridges one at a time. Do not leave an ink cartridge outside of the printer for more than 10 minutes. Also, never turn off the printer when an ink cartridge is removed from its slot. Leaving ink cartridge slots empty might cause damage to the ink system.
  1. Find a clean, lint-free cloth (eyeglass wipes or coffee filters work well) that you can use to clean the ink cartridge contacts.
  2. Open the ink cartridge access door.

If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step 5: Clean the ink cartridge contacts again
Cleaning the problem ink cartridge contacts a second time can help resolve the issue. Repeat the steps that you performed earlier in this document to clean the contacts.
If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step 6: Reset the printer
Resetting the printer can reset the connection with the ink cartridge and clear any error messages.
  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
      note:
HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  9. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step 7: Replace the problem ink cartridge
The error message might indicate a specific ink cartridge caused the error. Replace the problem ink cartridge.
