Issue:

Recommended Action:

  1. Ensure that the type and quality of the media you are using meets HP specifications:
    • Always use a paper type and weight is supported by the printer. Refer to the printer’s user manual for a list of supported paper types.
    • Use paper that has not been previously printed on.
    • Use paper that is of good quality and free of cuts, nicks, tears, spots, loose particles, dust, wrinkles, voids, staples, and curled or bent edges.
    • Use paper that does not contain metallic material such as glitter.
    • Use paper that is designed for use in laser printers.
    • Do not use paper that is designed only for use in Inkjet printers.
    • Use paper that is not too rough. Using smoother paper generally results in better print quality.
  2. Ensure that the tray guide width setting is set to the paper size being installed into the tray. The arrow on the guide should line up exactly with the line connected to paper size designation.
    note:
There is a detent and labeling for standard media sizes.
Figure : Example - width set to Letter/Legal.
  3. Check to ensure the tray length setting is set to the desired paper size.
    note:
There is a detent and labeling for standard media sizes. The arrow on the guide should line up exactly with the line connected to paper size designation.
Figure : Example: length set to Letter
  4. Avoid loading paper that is damaged (ex. Bent, torn, dusty, wrinkled, and curled) and or out of specification.
Figure : If opening a new ream of paper, be sure to flex the stack of media in both length and width directions.
  5. Load media stack from back-to-front to prevent getting caught on the rear guide.
Do not overload the tray above the marking shown below in the red circle in following image.
Figure : Example: media stack loaded against rear guide
    note:
Ensuring that the tray guide settings are in the proper position will reduce or prevent paper jams.
    note:
A Paper Tray Spacer Kit is available to help fix these issues by installing a spacer in the back of the tray (HP Part #: CF116-67927).
  6. When finished, gently install tray in printer and re-test.
  7. If the issue persists, verify the condition of the Tray 2 Paper Pick-up Roller:
    1. Check if the pick-up roller spins freely (360 degrees). If the roller spins freely (it should not), please contact HP Customer Support.
    2. Clean the pick-up roller with a dampened lint free cloth. Removing the buildup will help the roller pick the paper better.
    3. Check the pick roller for damage or wear. Replace the pick-up roller if necessary (HP Part #: RM1-6323-000CN).
