HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise - Print using Wireless Direct or Near Field Communication (NFC)

Introduction

When using an HP Enterprise printer with embedded Wireless Direct Print (built-in print access point) or HP Near Field Communication (NFC) capability, or after installing the HP Jetdirect 3000w NFC/Wireless Direct Accessory on an HP Enterprise printer, use the steps in this document to obtain a mobile printing app or solution appropriate for the mobile device and operating system, and to learn how to print wirelessly from a laptop, phone, or tablet.
note:
For setup and installation instructions for an HP Jetdirect 2900nw Print Server, go to Setup, install, and configure an HP Jetdirect 2900nw Print Server.

Step one: Setup the printer

If you are not sure how to perform any of the steps below, go to Setup, install, and configure an HP Jetdirect 3000w NFC/Wireless Accessory for detailed instructions.
  1. Make sure you have a compatible printer.
  2. Make sure that the printer is powered on.
  3. Turn on Wireless Direct on the printer.
  4. Turn on Near Field Communication (NFC) on the printer (optional).
  5. Obtain the Wireless Direct Name (SSID) and password on the printer control panel using the following steps:
    note:
The steps vary according to the control panel.
    FutureSmart 3
    FutureSmart 4
    • FutureSmart 3: From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select the Wireless icon, and then select Print. A page prints with the Wireless Direct Name (SSID) and password.
    • FutureSmart 4: From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select the Information icon, and then select Wireless Direct to view the Wireless Direct Name (SSID) and password. Select Print to print a page with this information.
    note:
The Service Set Identifier (SSID), or Wireless Direct Name, is the printer name that will be listed in the Wi-Fi list of available connections on the laptop, phone, or tablet. You can find the password on the printed page. If the password is not visible, contact your administrator.

Step two: Setup the laptop, phone, or tablet

Before you can print from a mobile device to an HP LaserJet printer, you need to setup the laptop, phone, or tablet and download a compatible Print app or driver.
If you have an Android 4.4 or newer, perform step 1 below and then continue to Step three: Connect to the printer and print.
For all other operating systems, follow the steps below:
  1. Turn on Wi-Fi on the phone or tablet.
  2. Turn on Near Field Communication (NFC) on the phone or tablet (optional).
    note:
This control is typically found in the Settings > Wireless menu but will vary depending on the device type and operating system version. You might need to also turn on Bluetooth.
  3. For Android devices, make sure a built-in print plug in is installed.
    1. Open Settings and open General settings.
    2. Open the Application manager.
If the HP Print Service Plugin or the Mopria Print Service is listed, the plug-in is installed. If not, continue to the next step.
    3. Go the Google Play Store and install either the HP Print Service Plugin or the Mopria Print Service.
  4. For NFC printing with Android or Windows devices, install the HP ePrint app or driver.
    note:
HP ePrint is the only compatible solution available for NFC printing with Android and Windows operating systems. NFC printing is not currently supported on Blackberry, Chrome OS, or iOS devices, or on Windows phones.
  5. For Wireless Direct printing, make sure you are using a compatible mobile print app or solution for your operating system:
    • Android version 4.4 and newer - Use the HP Built-in print solution (see Step three: Print)
    • Blackberry phone - Use the HP ePrint app or HP ePrint via email
    • iPad or iPhone 4.2 and newer - Use AirPrint or the HP ePrint app
    • Mac OS X 10.7 and newer - Use AirPrint
      note:
To make sure that the print driver is configured for AirPrint, go to Set up, install, and configure AirPrint.
    • Windows laptops/tablets running Windows 8 or newer - Use the HP ePrint Software driver (version 4.5 or newer)
      note:
Printing from Windows phones is not supported using Wireless Direct or NFC connections. To print from a Windows OS phone, use a network connection with the HP ePrint via email solution. For instructions, go to Setup HP ePrint via email.

Step three: Connect to the printer and print

Follow the steps below to print using either Wireless Direct or Near Field Communication (NFC).
