HP PCs - Resetting Your Computer (Windows 10)

This document is for HP and Compaq computers with Windows 10.
Windows 10 has a reset feature that repairs your computer by reinstalling the operating system. This can be done either while preserving your personal data and customizations, or removing all your personal data.

Perform a system reset through Settings
Use reset through Settings if your computer boots normally. If your computer does not boot normally, see Performing a reset through Windows Recovery Environment in this document.
  1. In Windows, search for and open Reset this PC.
  2. Click the Recovery tab, and then click Get started under Reset this PC.

    • If you want to keep your personal files, apps, and customizations, click Keep my files, and then click Reset.

        note:
      During the reset process, your apps are removed. Many of the apps can be reinstalled from the Store. However, if you have apps that are not available from the Store, a message displays a list of those apps. You need to reinstall those apps from the web or from installation discs. A list of the removed apps display on your desktop after you reset your computer.

    • If you want to remove all your personal files, apps, and settings, click Remove everything, and then continue to the next step.
  3. If you only want to remove everything from the drive where Windows is installed, click Only the drive where Windows is installed. If you want to remove all files from the computer, click All drives.

  4. If you want to delete your files, click Just remove my files, or If you want to clean the drive, click Remove files and clean the drive.

  5. Click Reset to confirm your selection, and then begin the reset process.

    Windows reinstalls the operating system and the computer restarts.
Perform a reset through Windows Recovery Environment
Use reset through Windows Recovery Environment if your computer does not boot normally. If your computer boots normally, see Performing a system reset through Settings in this document.

  1. Use one of the following methods to open Windows Recovery Environment:
    • Restart your computer and immediately press the F11 key repeatedly. The Choose an option screen opens.
    • Click Start . While holding down the Shift key, click Power, then select Restart. Continue holding down the Shift key as the computer restarts, until the Choose an option screen opens.
  2. On the Choose an Option screen, click Troubleshoot.

  4. If you want to keep your personal files and customizations, click Keep my files, then click Reset. Your computer reinstalls the operating system and your computer restarts. You are done.
    If you want to remove all files, click Remove everything and continue to the next step.

  5. If you only want to remove everything from the drive where Windows is installed, click Only the drive where Windows is installed. If you want to remove all files from the computer, click All drives.

  6. You can fully clean the drive, so that no files are recoverable, or you can delete your files.

  7. Click Reset.
